ECC stands for Error Checking and Correction. It is more expensive than non-ECC and is mainly used in servers and workstations (especially ones with a lot of memory). In a home system you probably will not need ECC memory since it will not give you any more performance than non-ECC (I've heard however that AMD FX-51 systems exclusively require ECC memory).
