Asus P7P55D Pro + i7 860. RAM is 4 x 2GB G.Skill DDR3-1333 7-7-7. Even tried with the timings at 9-9-9.

What am I missing?

Edit: No errors are displayed, it simply locks up.

What version are you using? Maybe an old one that doesn't like the P55 chipset?

Run it one stick at a time. See if one of the sticks is bad.

A lock up is a hard failure. Last time I ran into that, I had a bad stick, well two actually.

Another possibility is that the version of Mentest86 you have can't fully support the newer hardware. Not sure on that; I'd have to look it up.

I have started running the HCI Memtest that n7 recommended, so far without error.

Should I run Memtest86 with a single DIMM at a time? I'm not looking forward to that since I have to take the fan of my heatsink to get RAM in and out of the first slot.

This may be. Memtest86.com has this in their notes:

However, safely and reliably detecting all of the available memory has been problematic. Versions of Memtest86 prior to v2.9 would probe to find where memory is. This works for the vast majority of motherboards but is not 100% reliable. Sometimes the memory size detection is incorrect and worse probing the wrong places can in some cases cause the test to hang or crash.

This is what I am seeing. And version 3.5 was last updated 1-3-09.

I came across Memtest86+, which has Added support for Intel P55 Southbridge .

One run one stick at a time only if you get a failure when running them all. The purpose of running one at a time is to isolate the bad stick if it's just one stick. Of course, you could find out they're both bad, which always sucks.

If you have another Memtest that's running fine, just let it run for a few hours. If you don't get any errors, there's no point in running them one at a time.

Well if you are using Memtest 3.5 from www.memtest86.com that version is from Jan 2009. I would try Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. The 4.0 version has support for the i5/i7 on socket 1156.

Most hard locks I've seen with memtest is a compatibility problem with the motherboard/chipset and the version you are using. Especially if it hard locks every 4 seconds.

ONLY use Memtest86+. The "other" Memtest is buggy and problematic.

A friend of mine tried the "other" Memtest, and it would cause his computer to reboot during the test. OTOH, Memtest86+ runs just fine and tests all his RAM out correctly.
