MemTest86 Test 7 and me...

OK, I have MemTest86 1.51 and ran the full suite of tests for 10 hours or so. I got 62 errors in 62 passes in test 7 for a particular memory address.

So I have since reduced the timings and upped the voltage. I also replaced the power supply. Still get the error on test 7 at the same memory address.

My take: I think test 7 just writes and reads random values to all the memory cells in the memory. If it fails on a particular address consistently, that must mean the memory has a bad cell. I'm pretty sure that re-seating or trying different slots won't fix the error. If it has a bad cell, it has a bad cell.

Am I full of it or is my reasoning basically sound? I ask because I'm going back and forth with the manufacturer (so far amicably), and I'm getting to the point where I'm going to ask for a replacement. I just want to make sure I have the right analysis of my testing in case they send me on a wild goose chase of "try another slot," "re-seat them," "try a different motherboard," "try a different computer," etc.

If you really want to isolate testing memory and memory controller only, use tests 5 and 8 and run them each overnight. If no errors come up, then your ram should be good, and something else may be giving you trouble.

Since I really dont know what system you are running I cant really say what test are the most important to run. I knwo with my amd system test 5 and 6 seem to be the most prone to show error if there are to be any....I run overnight 20+ passes with all test then run 100 passes on each test 5 and 6...takes about 80-90 minutes for each of those...

Fact is you shouldn't get an error in any test regardless...If you only got errors in test 7 while running all the test that is ignificant on its own.

My system is in my sig. I ran all the tests overnight. Test 7 is the one that kept bombing. The memory is being RMA'd, so I'll test the new sticks when they arrive.

Why dont you do a sig like mine...way tooo much work for me to have to login (again!!! stupid AT) and click through user name then you rig etc....Total BS!!! Link does nothing to expedite the query....

AMD64 rig...I am surprised by the test 7 results... definitley why ppl should not jsut test 5 and 6 or 5 and 8...still should run a thorough multipass test of all the test....

Because maybe he doesn't want to have an annoyingly large sig that forces his rig specs onto everyone who reads one of his posts? :disgust:

Jeez, at least condense it into a couple of lines. Your sig is bigger than your post!

Yeah, that's why. And I read in a "how to use the forum" post somewhere that you should put your system in your sig. Its not too many clicks (I just brought up Matthias's fine rig in two clicks). You can tell AT to remember you so you don't have to login. It does a damned good job of setting that cookie and not losing it.

BTW, Matthias, I noticed you have Comcast 3m/256k. You might want to measure that. They are upgrading everyone to 4m/384k. You just have to recycle your modem to get it (if they've gotten to your area yet). I'm at 4m/384k now in Kansas City.

Yeah, I think they might have done that recently; I haven't run any bandwidth tests or updated my rig in a while...

Hi, I'm not familiar with Memtest86, but have much experience with older memory tests. My guess is that the test showing the errors is the Addressing Test. A bad, stuck on or off, Address line will not show errors on the simpler tests as the data is being written correctly, but in two different addresses. My guess is that the stick has a stuck address line. No pun intended. Jim
