I just got some new GEIL DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) RAM and have been testing it with Memtest86+ v1.65 for the last 8 hours. In the main blue screen that shows the WallTime, Cached, RsvdMem, MemMap, Cache, ECC, Test, Pass, Errors, ECC Errs, it shows "14" under Pass and "0" under Errors. However, when I hit the "c" key on the keyboard and go to "(4) Error Summary", it shows Test 1 through Test 10 have zero errors, but Test 0 has 3274 errors.

Test: 0 Errors: 3274

Is this normal?

I am often asked about the reliability of errors reported by Mestest86. In the vast majority of cases errors reported by the test are valid. There are some systems that cause Memtest86 to be confused about the size of memory and it will try to test non-existent memory. This will cause a large number of consecutive addresses to be reported as bad and generally there will be many bits in error. If you have a relatively small number of failing addresses and only one or two bits in error you can be certain that the errors are valid. Also intermittent errors are without exception valid. Frequently memory vendors question if Memtest86 supports their particular memory type or a chipset. Memtest86 is designed to work with all memory types and all chipsets. Only support for ECC requires knowledge of the chipset

Individual Test Descriptions
Memtest86 executes a series of numbered test sections to check for errors. These test sections consist of a combination of test algorithm, data pattern and cache setting. The execution order for these tests were arranged so that errors will be detected as rapidly as possible. A description of each of the test sections follows:

Test 0 [Address test, walking ones, no cache]

Tests all address bits in all memory banks by using a walking ones address pattern.

===========

yu might try removing all but one stick (you did not specify amt of RAM)
then another stick by itself
changing slots
increasing voltage
manually setting latency lower

Oh yeah, this is the RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144808

PC5300 667MHz CAS 4-4-4-12
64x8 DDR2 FBGA Chips
240pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
Aluminum Heat-spreader
6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
1.8V Power Supply

My processor is PentiumD 940
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116239

How do you change the latency? All of the RAM settings in my BIOS are set to auto. Also, I'm using Memtest86+, not the regular Memtest86.

I'm looking at the main screen right now (the blue screen that shows all the info. while Memtest 86+ is running) and it shows this:

Pentium D (65nm) 3215 MHz
L1 Cache: 16K 22479 MB/s
L2 Cache: 2048K 17470 MB/s
Memory: 2046M 2790MB/s
Chipset: Intel i945P/G
Settings: RAM: 333MHz (DDR666) / CAS: 5-5-5-15 / Dual Channel (Interleaved)

I understand what all of the above are except for that "CAS: 5-5-5-15".

Oh also, from GEIL's site:

Web Page for the RAM I have:
http://www.geilusa.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=52

*Important:
Please note, all SPD for GeIL product series PC5400 DDR2 667 & above (Value & Ultra) will be tuned by safe-mode technology to ensure 100% compatibility with various supported motherboard platforms. Thus, for low latency DDR2 product series, users will need to boot up the system with the default safe-mode SPD and re-adjust the SPD back to the factory rated lower SPD in BIOS setting.

The safe-mode techique on designated DDR2 product is necessary to ensure 100% compatibility with supported motherboards when booting up the system for the first time. Due to the fact that most motherboard manufactures do not have platforms supporting DDR2 memory modules automatically in CAS latency smaller than 5.

The safe-mode SPD will be applied to all GeIL's DDR2 series product 667 & above with shipping date December 2nd, 2005 and beyond. You will find a "CAUTION" card in every retai packaged DDR2 products mentioned above.

If you should have any question or need further assistance regarding this matter, please feel free to contact GeIL's Tech Support.

I don't know if that has anything to do with the errors I'm getting.

I'm now at 18 hours and 45 minutes. Everything is the same as in my first post except that under "Pass" it now shows 32. When I hit (c) and go to "(4) Error Summary", it shows Test 1 through Test 10 have zero errors, but Test 0 has 3274 errors.

Test: 0 Errors: 3274

My keyboard is USB so I need the legacy function on. How does the USB legacy setting affect the memory testing?

First of all, you shouldn't have to do the "c, error summary" thing.
The errors should be displayed in the table under the main screen and the number of errors should be listed under "Errors".
Check out this screenshot

This is what my screen looked like for the whole 29 hours I tested my RAM:

http://www.memtest.org/pics/i875-big.gif

At the end before I decided it had been testing long enough, under "Errors" it showed "0". However, when I hit "(c)configuration", then "(4) Error Summary", the screen that showed up, showed Tests 0 through 10. Tests 1-10 had zero erros, but Test 0 had 3274 errors.

I then restarted my PC, started up Memtest86+ again and this time I hit "(c)configuration", then "(3) Memory Sizing", then "(2) BIOS - ALL", it went back to the screen above, except the screen turned red instead of blue just under the very last line right below the titles "WallTime", "Cached", "RsvdMem", "MemMap", etc.. After switching to this mode, it stopped at "WallTime" 0:00:04 and under "Errors" it had the number "5120".

Does that mean my RAM is bad?

Ok, I went into the BIOS and manually put the RAM to 4-4-4-12 as its specification says it runs at. Then I ran Memtest86+ again for a couple of hours. When I went back to the error summary screen, all the tests (tests 0-10) had zero errors. So that issue seems to be fixed now.

However, going into "(c)configuration", then "(3) Memory Sizing", then "(2) BIOS - ALL", still does the same thing. It went back to the main Memtest 86+ screen, where the bottom half of the screen was red instead of blue, just under the very last line right below the titles "WallTime", "Cached", "RsvdMem", "MemMap", etc.. After switching to this mode, it stopped at "WallTime" 0:00:04 and under "Errors" it had the number "5120".

You do not normally need USB legacy on to use a USB keyboard. The option exists to allow the use of very old USB equipment.

I think your memory is fine either way. If there are errors, memtest will display them like in the screenshot I posted. I haven't heard of anyone needing to go into the config to show errors.
If your computer is functioning ok, why worry?
