Ok thanks for the suggestion I'll find and read it.

Love to hear your thoughts on it. You can PM me.

The same author wrote a very different book if it's of interest.

It's called "War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning", and is about the effects of war on societies.

For example, how he had good friends in Argentina who hated the ruling generals, but when there was war with England, they all became very patriotic.

It has a lot of stories he saw in war about how people were affected, including how war became an addiction even for him.

timing. Went to recruit, took the first test, had a meeting setup with a recruiter. And they something come up, in the week after ended up with a good enough college offer.

I don't think I ever planned to serve. But I ended up putting 6 years in Navy and it is one of my proudest and most rewarding accomplishments.

Command Sargent major, pay grade E7 highest possible for enlisted personal without a collage degree.

Command Sergeant Major, pay grade E9, which is the highest possible rank for enlisted personnel period - with or without a college degree. A great many enlisted have college degrees. Note: the E9 and E8 ranks were added in the 1950s.

Speaking as someone who did serve (long ago)...

I absolutely would NOT want some of these fine ATOT folks in a unit with me.

Didn't serve because went to college and got a job. Plus the war ended up being total BS anyway, sorry.

We all served with these people.
I had guys that didn't care if they were technically proficient because they joined for the college fund. Well guess what? My butt may depend on you knowing your job so we are going to drill till you know it inside out and get your SQT up over 90%.

That's why I asked because i knew Tidekilla115 was mistaken. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt it wasn't intentional.

Many E-9s, whether SM/CSM have college degrees btw. More often than not, I'd bet the SMOTA has a degree.

40 is not a millenial, as has been pointed out. Seems the cutoff is probably around age 30 at this point.
I only joined because I didn't really know what else to do at the time, and it didn't seem like it could be all that bad (it was--nine months of tech school, to spend the vast majority of my time in service filled with busy work and briefings, and occasionally actually having a chance to to meaningful work).

My younger brother joined the Marines and I asked him his reasons and his (anecdotal) reason ranked as

1. I had no purpose in life
2. I didn't care for the people in my life
3. I had no future in life
4. You (kiaman) would understand his wanting to find himself
It's pretty much what happens during times of crisis and war. In peacetime, if you get a couple beers into someone who is serving (or recently served), they will confess they joined for their own purposes and reasons (economic, for personal excitement or adventure, for the structure, because it was better than jail, the prestige of having it on their resume, a career path to something, GI Bill). But during wartime, all of a sudden everyone be like "I joined to protect YOU, I'm the sheepdog, and all the sheep have me to thank for freedom. I could have done a lot of other things for more money and didn't risk my life."

When you give someone a risk-free choice of narrative, are just handing them the golden opportunity to claim superiority of motive or reason without any fear of skeptical rebuke or doubt, it's a rare bird who won't take it.

To young for Vietnam.
First Gulf war came and went to quickly to get in it. Wife and 2 children probably would have kept me out anyway.
To old for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sorry if your disappointed in me but nothing lined up with my fighting years. I do thank you and everyone who did serve for your service.

Attempted Air Force ROTC while in college but was not medically cleared. I only have one kidney.

Odd my Brother in law gave away one of his kidneys and he still did 2 tours in the middle east with an air guard unit.

This. The last thing the services tend to want is someone who feels it "was always my destiny to go toe to toe with another man and fight to the death." Those guys tend to wind up with a psych discharge. My husband served more than 20 years and spent a great deal of his time planning how NOT to get anyone killed.

Yeah, he would have become a cop if the Army didn't want him.

This was back in the mid 90's after most of the gulf operations spun down. Maybe recruiting wasn't as needed then. I checked around with multiple recruiters but most of them noped out.

Grades were top of my class and record was clean as a whistle and was a collegiate athlete. So there was nothing funky going on there.

I already wrote about it here.

That was before I fucked my back up though.

I'm pretty patriotic and thank soldiers I see at restaurants and the store. I went to a funeral procession here in town for a soldier that was killed in Afghanistan. He got hit by an IED. The road down the way is named after him now. http://www.denverpost.com/ci_9220750 We attended the same school.

As required I was registered in Selective Service. Would you believe I got the card in the mail on my 18th birthday!

This is my favorite scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdNn5TZu6R8
