I feel like the barber shop handled this one appropriately. They said they only do men's style haircuts (when she asked for a style they don't do), they offered to pay for her at another location as an apology for the inconvenience. I wonder had she asked for a haircut that was a traditionally a men's style, would they have cut it.

Please select one of these 2 buzz cut options. That would have moved her along.

So we're going to start seeing push back out for women's only spas and fitness centers, right? How about the businesses that offer women reduced rates or free entry some or all of the time?

EDIT: Well at least the same state (Pennsylvania) has ruled against Ladies Night at bars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladies'_night)

I was reading an article the other day about a group of MRAs that just go around to as many of the women's nights or women's only places and try to get kicked out so they can sue.

I only go to barbershops to get my hair cut so yea im a bit biased and think the chick who filed the complaint was just being a bitch . she knew full well that the barbershop was geared towards men. And to be fair the barbers i go to have been only cutting men's hair for decades and would not feel comfortable with cutting a womans hair fashion.

The first thing you need to to is know what you're talking about before making lame excuses for other people. This is what the woman asked for, a fade cut-

It's a man's hair style that's becoming unisex.

Yeh, cutting a woman's hair every month or few would really spoil the atmosphere, huh?

The whole place would be poisoned by estrogen.

This seems absurd. Suppose she wanted to buy a bunch of bananas. Could the shop be fined for not selling her that? The answer, it seems to me, lies in whether the shop will do a fade cut for men. If so then maybe it's gender discrimination.

As long as all women's only places start letting guys in. Or maybe they'll be poisoned by testosterone.

Correct answer. Buzz it and send her on her way.

I'm not condoning what I'm about to describe, but just like how both management and employees exploit company policies via painting shades of grey into what's supposed to be black and white like the paper and ink it's printed on, that barber shop, in their own way of exploiting the law, could have done a really lousy job on the lady's hair "just short" of getting sued in the hopes that she'd never ever go there again.

No, they should have just have pointed to a man with a fade cut and said "That's what our 'fade' cut looks like; is that acceptable?" And if the woman assented, they should have given her a regular fade cut.

But that would have been too simple.

There is nothing unisex about that haircut. It's a male haircut. 99% of the photos in your google search link are men.

If I were that barber I'd be cautious about giving her a male haircut without her written acknowledgement that yes, that this is what she wants.

I don't think the barbershop needed to get all legalistic about it. If they'd simply showed some humility ("Ma'am, we don't have any experience at all giving fade cuts to women; but if that's what you want and you're willing to take the chance that we won't do a very good job, we'll do our best. But there are no guarantees."), I think the woman would have had her expectations in the right place.

Barber shop's are often 'mens only'. It's a place where men go.

Yes, its gender discrimination. Just like 'Curves for Women'.

The entire point of the business is that it discriminates.

So while it may be gender discrimination, I don't think it's inherently bad discrimination.

Why would you go to a barbershop to get your hair cut?

The guys are barbers by day, surgeons by night. I wouldn't trust them to cut my hair. Jack of all trades, masters of none and a half.

Sure, that sorta went outta fashion 500 years ago, but still. What if your barber was alive back then?

Just give her a marine haircut.

I get my hair cut kind of short. I get it cut at a barbershop that has all women working there. So I dont know what the problem is. So why cant a barber shop cater to men only? I dont see the problem. She probably could not get an appointment at the salon.

I agree. What I don't understand about all that is why was the fine apparently legal.

They SHOULD have told her, "Sorry, we're not trained to cut female styles."

Then, when she insisted...they should have given her a nice, military length flat-top.

"Sorry, we DID try to warn you."

Why does a thread like this bring our so many jerks who see the only solution as fucking the customer. Are we really all two year olds here?

Don't bother to respond, I know the answer.

When you let the government set all the rules you get Fascists in charge with absolute rule. This is like suspending someone because they have play dough tool.
