Hmn, i've got a qs on MSN Messenger. Apparently, there are two different Messengers that microsoft produces - Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. When u install Windows XP, you've [prolly] got Windows Messenger (4.7?). Now, if u downlaod the new Messengers (eg. 6.0), the new Messenger (MSN Messenger) doesn't "upgrade" the old one. Hence, you've got two messengers running - very annoying.

Now, I've tried removing the old Messenger via Add/Remove Programs --> All/Remove Windows Components, but it merely removes the shortcuts to the old messenger rather than uninstalling it. And the old messenger does some real funny stuff, even when I set it to not start everytime i login, it does. I set it not to sign-in when it detects internet, but it does. And it's conflicting with my new MSN Messenger 6.0.

Can anyone help me fix this prob?

I don't mind using Messenger (the IM client that is). But it really annoys me how it refuses to behave. So I changed the name of it's root folder - usually program files\messenger. I change it to something simple, like program files\messenger1. This stops it from auto-loading at startup (and running at all, unless you rename the folder back to what it was). . .

Well, to begin with, I can't rename the messenger folder cuz it gives me access denied error (I presume its cuz the file is in use...). Even if I managed to do so, it's shocking how thingz are always so integrated with windows. I mean, that's good in a way, but...look at me

Something is weird with your Windows Messenger... I am running XP (so Windows Messenger is installed), and I also installed MSN Messenger 6.0...

I just set Windows Messenger to not start on startup and use MSN messenger only... works fine for me...

Uninstall "Hidden" Windows Components
Apparently, Microsoft didn't want you to be able to remove useless garbage like Windows Messenger. It's installed by default, and it doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Program applet in Control Panel.

Thankfully, you can force the issue by editing the SYSOC.INF file, which is located in the C:\WINDOWS [or your Windows XP directory]\INF folder. Open it with Notepad.

Under the [Components] heading, you'll see a whole bunch of parameters for various Windows applets. Some of them contain the word "hide." Those particular programs, which include Windows Messenger (msmsgs), Terminal Server, Pinball, and others, are installed on your XP system, but their entries are hidden from and Add/Remove dialog.

To remove Windows Messenger, edit hide out of the line that reads

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

so that it looks like this:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Save the file, close it, and open the Add/Remove Program applet. Click on Windows Components button and you'll see Windows Messenger listed. Uncheck it and click Next to purge that silly program from your system.

Feel free to edit hide everywhere it appears in the SYSOC.INF file to reveal other removable Windows XP components.

This tweak is used to remove MSN Instant Messenger functionality and integration from Outlook Express.
Open your registry and find the key below. You may need to create the key, if it does not already exist.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'Hide Messenger' and edit the value according to the settings below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Hide Messenger REG_DWORD 0x00000002 (2)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express]
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)

If the key is not there, you can create it yourself. It will still work.

Type regedit at the "run" line.
In the registry window, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express.
Once you're there, go to "edit" at the top of the screen. Then select "new" then "key."
Then just set the values to:
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)

Tip: Outlook Express Runs Slowly after Disabling/Removing Messenger. Only 3 Registry edits are required to stop
Messenger and get rid of the delay in OE.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client. Add the following values as New, DWord Values: PreventRun, PreventAutoRun. Set the value of each of these to1. Then go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWord value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2. (This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the Contacts pane enabled).

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}\InProcServer32

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}\LocalServer32

For both, in the right pane, right click Default/Modify/Delete the value data.

If you enjoy using other features besides text (such as app sharing or videoconferencing), you should not remove Windows Messenger or rename the folder, since MSN Messenger relies on many of the components WinMsgr provides.

XP SP1 installs build 41 of Windows Messenger 4.7 (XP Gold installs v4.0). Version 4.7 has code written into it that detects when you have installed MSN Messenger, and unchecks its own "Run when Windows starts" option...and then on the next boot, it doesn't run. However, some people have some sort of configuration whereas this doesn't work as expected...just go into Tools->Options->General and do it yourself.

Note that Windows Messenger will continue to auto-launch when using OE or GameVoice (among one or two other apps). Some apps will allow you to turn off the integration.

Dualing Messengers is annoying for some. However, lots of people find that a 150 contact limit for Messenger is even more annoying...so these people run both MSN and Windows Messengers side-by-side, effectively doubling their number of contacts. Other people use dual clients to separate friends and family from co-workers. And at the office, Windows Messenger can be used for the corporate SIP server, while MSN can be running at the same time containing the .NET contacts.

If you are getting access defined errors then control-alt-delete and force the program to close. Then rename the folder ...

Hmmm...that's all I did....renamed Windows Messenger folder to old Messenger....sorted....I see something in event log whining but it doesn't popup anything.

Do a CTRL + SHIFT + ESC and ensure there is nothing messenger like running in the processes....also ensure that you have closed any instances of Outlook, Outlook Express & Internet Explorer.

MSN Messenger relies on Windows Messenger? Funny, because I always uninstall Windows Messenger using
"rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf" and I'm able to run MSN Messenger fine (5 and 6).

I never said you couldn't run MSN Messenger after uninstalling Windows Messenger. I started my reply by specifically saying:

Loading MsnMsgr and typing instant messages still works fine, as you have apparently observed. And if that single feature is all you care about, then go ahead and uninstall WinMsgr.

Otherwise, you will find when trying to use some of the advanced features of MsnMsgr, a message in your history window will say, "Sorry dude, no can do without the L&G of WinMsgr, go get it, we'll wait...". If using MsnMsgr v6.0, this dialog will appear anyway for a couple of features if you still have v4.0, v4.5 or v4.6 installed...you'd need v4.7 to make that particular feature work.
