Metal fans are such bleeding hearts. Nothing is good enough, no song, no list, no amount of endless growling, demon calling, pastiche making, mould conforming, head banging, \m/ raising or torrid bullshit that this genre has been pumping out for the last thirty years, to the derision of even its most ardent fans.

With metal, it's cool to hate and you're cool if your obscure preference is never on a list.

I could make that same argument about just about any type of artistic expression.

Megadeth's Endgame kicked serious ass.

Slipknot and Korn are beyond their primes and I would have dropped both albums much lower as well as Death Magnetic.

Subliminal Verses Vol. 3 was actually a damn good album. That was their prime as an overall band. Though I've been enjoying Stone Sour quite a lot.

Nice to see A7X's City of Evil in the top ten! Absolutely loved that album, though depending on what sound I prefer to listen to any certain day, it's always a toss up between City of Evil and Walking the Fallen. CoE has a more comprehensive epic sound that spans the entirety of the last half of the CD, which is almost simply due to the lyrical storytelling, which imho, is beautiful... the actual instrument backing also carries it forward quite perfectly.

I disagree. NAG is 10000x better than anything LOG has put out with Sony. Its a shame that Prosthetic bands put out good albums and then when signed on big labels they put out crap.

I know right. I hate it when music has good production value.

I just gave The Blackening an honest listen on the Myspace link someone posted earlier. Eh, I like the fact that there are still people out there listening and making new music that is "metal", but this example isn't that great. I dunno, I grew up during the Slayer/Megadeth/Metallica/Anthrax heyday, so I'm a bit spoiled. But there are some newer bands that I like. I don't usually know when an album came out, I still think Sepultura's "Chaos A.D" (one of the best metal albums of ALL TIME) sounds like it could have come out today and been relevant. But I would like to see more black metal on this list, and there are some awesome death metal bands out like Necrophagist and Dying Fetus that are still putting out good albums.

Prothsetic has enough money to put out good sounding albums. Himsa was the same way, once they went to Century Media they were a whole different band.

the blackening isn't bad, but come the fuck on.

and 'death magnetic' doesn't deserve 'album of the day it was released,' let alone mentioning that sonic abortion when talking about top albums of the decade...

Just going to throw this out there for perspective:
Helloween - The Dark Ride (2000) Gambling with the Devil (2007)
Ayreon - The Human Equation (2004)
Tool - 10,000 Days (2006)
Amon Amarth - Crusher (2001) Versus the World (2002) Fate of Norns (2004) With Odin on our Side (2006) Twilight of the Thunder God (2008)
Agathodaimon - Serpent's Embrace (2004)
Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera (2002)
Edguy - Hellfire Club (2004)

Fuck I'm getting tired of listing. Gamma Ray released 4 albums this decade - all of which are better than most of this list.

Ok let's talk about Disturbed for a second, they may have a mass produced sound and they started off very nu-metal or whatever the fuck it's called. But if we are going to include them at all then 10 thousand fists and indestructible are worlds better than Down with the Sickness.

Meh .... IMO list is pretty bad....

No Ayreon, Porcupine Tree, Electric Wizard, Immortal, Paradise Lost, Sentenced, Nile, Nevermore, Candlemass, Kreator, Kamelot, Amon Amarth, Behemoth, Katatonia, Anathema, or so many other good bands ...

Ok ... Porcupine Tree isn't really "metal" as they started out with psych rock, and dabbled in prog metal, but then again, NIN isn't metal.... and they made the list...

Ohh well, at least Machine Head kicks ass, but SOAD, Slipknot, Korn? Seriously?
And Megadeth and Metallica? They haven't put out anything really great since the early 90s.

Seriously, why the hell is Dopethrone not on the list?

Definitely going to have to agree here. 10,000 Fists is infinitely better. Indestructible is sort of close but I like all of the songs on 10,000 Fists whereas Indestructible has some hit and miss (for me).

Death Angel is still going strong and kicking ass, saw them in hollywood a few months ago with Arsis, at the roxy. Seriously, sickest metal show i have seen in forever. It was straight mayhem, EVERYONE was getting on stage on diving, i mean EVERYONE and the mosh was basically the whole floor of the Roxy, was intense, i actually got headbutt (unintentionally) and had a bloody nose for the last half of the concert, so that sort of sucked.

Anyways,

Bad list is bad, whatever credibility they had is now pooped on. Someone punch the people who made that list.

I don't really see the appeal to cookie monster singing. How can you even take the music seriously?

Death Magnetic is a great album, provided you can get a copy of the Rock Band version of it.

I bet Dave Mustaine is thrilled to beat Metallica at something

Rather dissapointed to see Heaven and Hell ranked sorta low.

One of the biggest epiphanies of my music-listening career was to stop taking it so seriously. I actually like that I can't understand the words in most metal, because about 50% of the time, when I learn the lyrics to a song, it just make the song seem stupid to me. The voice is merely an instrument. It makes a sound. Intelligible language is optional.

My grandpa was similarly horrified by distorted guitars.

While I'm here, I would like to recommend Galneryus to anyone who vaguely likes power metal. The engrish accent actually has a certain charm to it.

I don't disagree with most of your post, but I do with this. The last few Gamma Ray albums have been massive Priest/Maiden "inspiration"-fests. Hansen is undoubtedly one of power metal's greatest influences, but he stopped writing original music quite a while ago.

Yeah, once I actually sat down and read the lyrics in the liners to Fear Factory's Obsolete, I honestly didn't even want to listen to the music anymore. I don't know the lyrics to most of my favorite songs of all time, whatever genre they are. Songs I've listened to hundreds of times.

I read those lyrics when I was about 15 so I thought they were cool and now I'm just desensitized to them. But reading any FF lyrics for the first time now is quite painful. Really cliche stuff.
