In the immortal words of that flash video that floated around here a few months ago, "Napster bad. Beer good."

<< While most senators remained studiously neutral throughout the hearing, Sen. Diane Feinstein, Democrat from California, took the opportunity to lecture Napster's Barry about his company's business model and what she saw as its threat to intellectual-property laws.

``Napster has found a methodology which entirely defeats the process of copyright protection,'' Feinstein said.

Feinstein, who is up for reelection this year, received $101,000 in campaign contributions from the entertainment industry in the past two years, according to opensecrets.org, a campaign-finance Web site.

What the hell, Lars?!

I see both sides of the Napster issue. On one hand, the bands make their money selling music, so in a way, MP3s are piracy.

However, we've had this funny thing for quite some time called a radio. Anyone ever hear of it? To me, MP3 sites are just modern day radio...without the static. If anything, MP3 sites help promote the music sales. Besides, I went to a Metallica concert a couple of weeks ago. Do you even know how much they were charging for a t-shirt? There was one there for $75.00!!!! So, while I can see both sides, I think even with MP3s, the bands are making money hand over fist and should quit whining over some kid listening to their song for free.

I definitely think that something should be done... if everyone plays their cards right, we caould all be happy. My main complaint is that I have to pay 17.99 + tax for a CD that I like 2 or 3 songs off of and the rest are all crap (well, not Metallica CD's). Wouldn't it be great if you could pay $2.00 a song or something and download it from the Internet instead? I don't buy CD's because I don't wanna pay that much. I'd definitely pay a couple bucks for two or three. See where I'm going with this?

This:

At one point during the hearing, Senate aides downloaded a song by the grunge band Creed.

The song took several minutes to download. ``We've barely moved beyond the quill pens ourselves,'' quipped Sen. Leahy.

Creed is *not* grunge. Period, end of discussion.

I just wouldn't listen to music if it weren't for napster. I don't need it, it just makes life more pleasurable. I'm definately not paying $16 for 1 song I like.

Screw metallica, I know they were stupid crack-heads, I just didn't know they were so stupid they would sue people who were advancing their career.

I see this as a very simple case. Metallica doesn't want their music on napster. Napster can prevent that.

Metallica should be able to decide how their music is traded among the masses....END OF STORY.

All the music pirates like to claim that

MP3 sites help promote the music sales

and at the same time they maintain that:

I just wouldn't listen to music if it weren't for napster. I don't need it, it just makes life more pleasurable. I'm definately not paying $16 for 1 song I like

LOL. I think a lot of the idiocy comes from people's narrow perception of property. It's the same reason that they make TV-set DVD players about 6 times larger than they need to be. Americans have an expectation of getting something large and physical when they pay money. Intellectual property is just as legitimate as physical property. Unfortunatly, many people think that it's OK to steal software and music because their not gaining anything physical. If I wrote a song and wanted to charge $1 million per CD, you would no right to steal it from me claiming that I was "charging too much money". Many people think that stealing music in the form of Mp3's is a legitimate form of protest against perceived "high music prices". But it's rather pathetic because you steal the item in the process. If you want to protest against music prices, boycott it, you idiots. Ever notice how people who are against the slaughter of animals are vegetarians? They wouldn't really accomplish much if they maintained that position and ate meat anyways.

The U.S. government has a responsibility to maintain - among other things such as national security and public services - the protection of people's intellectual property. If the U.S. government permits music piracy on the internet, what next? Maybe it'll be OK to rip off the next Harry Potter book and post it word for word on the internet. I hope that they nail the fsckers at Napster bad.

But think about it, it really is like when casettes came out. Look how easy it was to dupe a casette. Mp3s and CD-Rs are the next step, and despite the ease of duplication, record sales are up 8% from last quarter.

It's just the next step after FM radio. Does Napster need to be regulated? Maybe. But there are very good arguments on both sides.

Well I must say that I started liking techno music because I heard a couple Chemical Brothers songs with real player (before MP3's caught on). I never really heard techno before that (acctually I never listened to music much before that).

Now I have 4 Chemical Brothers CD's and 2 Fatboy Slim CD's, just from hearing those couple songs through "illegal" realplayer streams. And guess what? I will continue to buy CD's.

(acctually, Astralwerks, the label of both the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim seems like a really cool one. Look at their website (http://www.astralwerks.com). TONS and TONS of songs to listen to and music videos to watch, all free. Wish all the labels would be like them )

I use napster for 2 reasons

1) To sample music - "Sample" is the key word. I have about 700 MB of mp3s on my hard drive, but I have legitamately purchases 7 cds this week alone.

2) To piss record companies off/protest - The record company makes too much money off cds. $18 for a cd that cost maybe a $.25 to make is ridiculous. Although manufacturers of all products (including CDs) can and should choose what to charge for their merchandise, a lot of the profits from cds are going to the filthy rich record companies (and not to the deserving artists). With the internet, bands don't need record companies for the creation and distrobution of cds. The RIAA doesn't like their role becoming obsolete.

Damn it, I wish I lived in california so I could vote against that Feinstein *****.

Why don't you idiots understand that not agreeing with something's price does not give you any right to steal it? All of your arguments are filled with endless cliches of "filthy rich record companies" and how your psuedo progressive exploits (petty theft, by normal standards) are supposedly going to affect change.

Two wrongs don't make a right you fools. Do you think MLK would have been successful if he had gone arounding forcing himself into the front seats of Southern buses by beating up the old white people that usually sat there, instead of organizing a boycott? I bet none of you give a sh|t either. I don't think any of you would have the capacity to understand the difference anyways. So quit pretending you have any noble ambitions and accept the fact that you're no better shoplifters and pickpockets.

Ugghhh... The really sad part is that you folks have voting privelages in this society.

<Ugghhh... The really sad part is that you folks have voting privelages in this society.>

That's not the sad part, that's the great part about being an American. Everyone has the opportunity to voice their opinions, or not voice them if that's what they choose.

With that said, in my opinion, theft is theft, regardless of reason.

cyber sax is right you guys, how would you like being a programmer (i am sure some of you are) and working for months on a project.. and when it is time to pay off, you are laid off... due to the AMAZING lack of sales... since one copy can go a million ways free.

you'd not be so quick to defend napster then i'd wager.

see, you may hurt the record companies by deafening sales, yes...

but what do you think is gonna happen to the artist you like?
the company is a business and must think like one. if a band is making no sales or could be running higher...

they get dropped,

liabilities are a bitch.

so the next time you dnld a song and think it rocks, just remember you are a small piece of what may put that band out of music.
