Wish there were more on this, but the thought that it's being made makes me very happy . Hope they release an mp4 bundle switch. That's when I'll be buying it.

Wow, the game looks awesome from that trailer.

Lol yeah they showed nothing. Shemnue 3 showed more engine work when they announced that they were going to try Kickstarter for crowd funding than Nintendo shows with this. We literally know nothing except that it's in development and with Nintendo's history of development we are likely going to be waiting 3 or 4 years. I want it but I'd be surprised if we can play Metroid Prime 4 before the next olympic games.

The only reason they announced this is so people wouldn't get pissed off that the 3DS got a new 2D Metroid game.

They actually learned their lesson after that Pokemon Direct. The also announced the Switch is getting a real Pokemon at E3 to do some damage control regarding that direct (and maybe getting out ahead of the whole "the new Monster Hunter will be everywhere but the Switch" thing).

Could be, I mean there's quite a few people who finished Zelda and now have nothing to look forward to if they are like me and don't like the looks of anything until they can get Mario Odyssey. Nintendo has to show them that they didn't buy into a system with no life in it while the 3DS is getting everything.

Monster Hunter will be big no doubt (I'll probably wait for it on PC), but it's no Pokemon in terms of market power.

edit: speaking of Mario is there any videos from E3 that don't have some overly excited reporter talking in the background and gushing uncontrollably like a 12 year old in the front row to see Justin Beiber? I find nearly all the reporting from E3 to be impossible to watch and listen to. Especially if it involves talking to a developer who is clearly out of their element and it makes for a very uncomfortable conversation.

To take that even a step further, Nintendo has very little among their first party IPs outside of big Zeldas and Marios (that come once a generation or so) to really appeal to core gamers like yourself. Metroid Prime 4 is the most important game for them this generation because since the last Prime game we have watched realistic first person shooters come to dominate the industry, and Metroid Prime is the only series Nintendo has that even comes close to catering to that taste in gaming. They need a big budget first person shooter somewhere since third parties aren't coming any time soon, and I think that is why the game got such a massive positive reaction.

As it is right now 2018 is looking like a step back for Nintendo in appealing to core gamers. The announced 2018 games of Fire Emblem, Yoshi and Kirby are more centered around attracting Japanese or kid/parents with very little for those who bought a console to play BOTW and Odyssey. The potential of a Metroid Prime in 2019/2020 might be the only thing keeping someone like you from selling your Switch that will be collecting dust at that point. Nintendo has to play the long game.

On a side note related to that: holy crap the Payday 2 developers look like geniuses today. I fully expected at least one new mature port to pop up at E3 for 2017 but there was none. I hear the Payday 2 devs treat the consoles like second class citizens, but they will offer the only GTA replacement for the Switch all this year. I expect they will make a killing off of that, and other developers will jump in too little too late after reading headlines that the Switch version of Payday 2 shattered records for the series this Christmas.

Have you played Payday 2? It's nothing like GTA. It's a shooter, not an open world game full of satire and crude humor with loads to do that feels like a living city. Two different markets. I disagree that the switch needs an FPS game as well. I don't think people are buying it to play CoD clones at all.

Well I'm excited. I actually haven't played the previous Metroid Prime games, always wanted to. I know I can get the Wii compilation on the Wii U eshop, but I'd buy an HD remaster of those games for the Switch in an instant. On that note, excited for the Metroid 2 3DS remake as well.

Hey now, I'd say Fire Emblem is more targeted at "core gamers" than you're giving it credit for. "Fire Emblem Awakening" was widely praised and probably drew a fair amount of core gamers to the 3DS platform.

As for "selling your Switch"...personally, I would never do that. Firstly, as a huge Zelda fan I would never want to give up the ability to play Breath of the Wild whenever the mood strikes me. Heck, I still play A Link to the Past about once a year. Second, even if it looked like there was a dry spell of games coming up, I wouldn't want to forego the potential to play future games that just may not have been announced yet.

I don't think the Switch needs an FPS, sure, but I do think it's a genre that Nintendo would benefit from catering to. Can you imagine how well Overwatch would do if it was ported to Switch? (Then there's me, who would love to see some of my favorite last gen games ported to Switch, ie the Mass Effect trilogy, Portal, Batman Arkham, Deus Ex Human Revolution...but that's just me. At least I'm getting Skyrim.)

With nintendo's pitiful online system I don't think games like overwatch would do well at all.

I dunno to be honest I'm impressed with how MK8D is online. It's a bajillion times better than SF5 on PS4 is at least. I haven't played with friends and don't know anyone with a Switch so I haven't dealt with the whole friend code bs, but the way it plays online and matchmaking being fast and seamless is very nice.

I never thought I'd even take it online but had it upstairs and was playing MK8 on my couch, and there was just something about playing a "real" game online in handheld mode that felt very cool.

I haven't heard any plans yet, other than they might do it once it's more mainstream, but I'm speculating Nintendo's entry into VR soon. I think it would work great with the Switch's set up. The Switch screen itself doesn't have motion controls, so the head mount would have to contain them, but I can imagine removing the joycon's and slipping the head mount directly into the slots where the joycon's go, then just holding the joycons, particularly with the strap attachments that have the trigger buttons, for hand manipulation.

Edit: Off topic. Thought this was the Switch thread.

Yup and Reggie from Nintendo America confirmed @ E3 that yes, a mobile device app is required for chat on the Switch.

It really doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You have to be within wifi to play online on the switch anyways, there's zero excuse to not build it in to the system.

Maybe it's because I've never played a Metroid Prime game, but I don't understand how anyone can get excited over literally nothing except a title graphic.

I would have liked seeing an announcement of WiiU games being ported to the Switch for those of us who never bought a WiiU. Give me Super Mario Maker, Wind Waker/Twilight Princess HD, Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, DKC Tropical Freeze. I don't know how the lack of the WiiU gamepad might change the gameplay of some of these games but I still want to play them.

Because you now know it's in development and coming instead of if or when they will make a new one?

Well it is exciting that we will get another one. The previous entries were really good IMO and this is pretty surprising to see. Like I said though it will be a long time before we see it.

Let a Muppet explain it for you:

tl;dr it's a sign that Nintendo has renewed faith in a franchise that had been neglected and mishandled for the past decade. Many fans had given up hope that they'd see anything like a new Metroid game they were interested in playing. And one of the common refrains of criticism for the Wii U was "They didn't make a Metroid game for it!"

Eh, I'd rather have Metroid: Samus Returns for the Switch. They ought to consider just putting games like that on both consoles. Sure, there'd be a bit of cannibalization, but I'm kind of tired of all the Nintendo games that are more like the SNES games that I want being tossed on the 3DS. I don't need to stare at a tiny handheld when I'm at home with huge TVs at my disposal!

They don't mind Wii U ports but they are avoiding first party 3DS ports. I guess they have standards for what Switch games are supposed to look like.
