You have to respect how the cartels have gotten smarter. The old 'plata o plomo' method cost money to bribe the cops, it's far more cost effective to simply scare them away.

No wonder the Mexican president was upset at the thought of CA legalizing weed; it dipped into the money getting stuffed into his pockets by the cartels.

Isn't the "war on drugs" that USA started great! Sleep well, Ronald Reagan. Sleep well.

Nixon

I even have the photo of him shaking hands with Elvis for their pledge to fight this war together! lol.

That wont help.

Of course it will. They have ONE potential income source. Deny them that and what exactly do they use to buy their army? It's not like they're going to make enough to run an entire country on the backs of selling pinatas to tourists.

problem is we need a more open boarder. we are keeping the good people of mexico from earning a real living here in the US. So they turn to the cartels to make money and have to do something to get noticed.

Things that cannot be won through war and firepower:

Drugs
Hookers and prostitution
Guns
Religion

Do what you can but these will always exist.

NO! He decriminalized all drug possession which was a needed step toward outright legalization, which would cripple the drug trade by taking away the enormous profit margin of producing and moving drugs. A one hour meeting with GWB later, and he backslid on that.

The Mexican problem is coming straight from the highest levels of government here. I can't wait until this level of violence comes here. It will not be long now.

Lol, again, I'm all for the legalization of drugs, but I can't help but roll my eyes at the idea that so many here think a logical solution to cartels in another country is to change our own. Sure, we *can* help, but we shouldn't have to do shit.

This is like saying we should be mandating Sharia law so that the muslim extremists in Afghanistan don't get so angry.

No it won't. The vast majority of the money is in cocaine. All drug laws must end. Humans have always and will always desire drugs, and will do anything to get them. Making any of them illegal will create a black market. We would be better of with cocaine factories right here.

Haven't you noticed? The current in thing is to bash America and blame it for everyone elses problems. No one wants to make brown people responsible for their actions.

Legalizing Marijuana isn't going to do shit. All of you stating that it's going to fix Mexico are completely ignorant of just who and what this Cartel is. There aren't multiple cartels in Mexico anymore.

There's one. El Chapo's. The Sinaloans.

He's killed all the rest. And his business is worldwide. He runs South America, he runs Mexico and he runs the US and Canadian drug business. He's up in Europe now too.

You legalize weed?

So what. Unless you're going to legalize Meth, heroin, coke and ecstasy you're not going to cut into his profits all that much. That Cartel runs it all.

Legalizing weed isn't going to be some magic pill that makes them go away. They are too damn big for that. That boat sailed a decade ago.

And then we could outsource 'em...oh wait.

The issue is that Dope Inc. has grown so large, that dismantling it abruptly without a suitable cash based economic structure to replace it would create a gaping financial hole. We are beyond the point of no return, we need the bad guys. Money laundering is largely what keeps these big banks in business with cash on the books.
