Many people in this thread continue to ignore the obvious. There are plenty of Mexicans who speak English. They are not cleaning bathrooms b/c they speak English.

You really need to blame the cleaning companies who are only willing to pay a wage that no English speaking person would accept.

No, you need to blame the English-speaking people for thinking they deserve anything more than what the mexican is willing to be paid. Noone wants to be an underclass. Go ahead, chase out the mexicans - i'm excited to see which white people end up cleaning toilets and bathrooms.

That's my point. People complain about illegal immigrants w/o realizing that they are a huge part of our economy. It?s not only relevant to cleaning toilets either. It also extends to construction, restaurants (especially true for illegal Mexicans) and many other areas of the economy.

I don't blame my dissapointments on anyone but myself, unless it has been out of my control. You are absolutely correct - there will be no "white", but that's probably even more frightening to the folks in this thread that a white minority status.

Why can't they speak english when moving to the U.S.?
Two reasons:
1. A false sense of entitlement.
2. We enable this type of behavior, i.e. street signs, or directions in multiple languages.

Here's what we need to do:

**Make English the official language of the United States**

All official federal/state documentation should be in English with no Spanish versions. Want a driver's license? Prove that you are legal (or have a valid visa) and can speak English. Why the *&^# should we have to be inconvenienced for someone who wants to shack up here in OUR country and expect us to bend over backwards for them. We're making it too easy on them and they're taking advantage. I say cut out the free breadsticks and salad!!!

I appreciate your situation, but have to wonder why they should learn English when it's you wanting to communicate with them?

I suspect these Immigrants(Legal or otherwise) have a number of reasons for not learning English(or whatever language is predominant where they go). One of the main reasons is likely that they don't have any time to, they're too busy trying to make enough $$ to live or send back to family back home.

Visit my old high school sometime. Most of the hispanic students (which make up 50% of the school) do not speak English.

This is very true. The Mexican immigrants that come to the US tend to have an extremely poor education, if any, and have created their own dialect of Spanish. The longer they are in the US, the worse their Spanish seems to get, too, as the remain uneducated without any sources for proper Spanish. I find it extremely difficult to talk in "Spanish" with the locals in my town, as most are uneducated farm hands.

The whole point of the rant is missed by pretty much everyone who posted.

Because the OP cannot pull the workers aside and explain their screwup to them, the only way to resolve the situation is to go snitching on them to their boss, which makes the OP feel like a worm. If they spoke English, the OP could deal with the situation directly instead of having to go crying to their daddy.

The fact that they after he snitched they still won't follow directions from their boss is just extra stuff thrown into the story and not really relevant to the rant.

Considering our large population of Mexicans now where I am, surprisingly we don't have any Mexicans that clean our restrooms (they're African Americans).

Actually I don't know if they 'clean' anything since the restrooms look/smell like they haven't been cleaned in years. Maybe they just restock paper & soap. That's all anyone ever does when we're here.

But I was reading a story today about the bad tornadoes we had here last weekend and a Mexican had been working on a house buing built when the top floor colapsed on him. Since he didn't speak any English, the firefighters rescuing him couldn't tell him that the chainsaws they were using mere feet from his head on the other side of the boards were not going to cut him. Surprised the guy didn't have a heart attack.

As to the "official" languages of Canada; French and English are required to be spoken by government agencies state-wide. Provincially, only New Brunswick is officially bilingual - Quebec is french, the rest are english.

As school children, every Canadian is required to take 10 years of second language instruction (either English or French) and all our packaging must be in both official languages. Also, if there's a demonstrable need for French language schools they must be accomodated no matter where you live.

Within each region someone who only speaks english may not have a great time finding employment in many areas of Quebec, just as a Fracophone cannot expect to be hired in Saskatchewan speaking only French. But having fluency in both is a great asset and required for most public service employment (at least the fundamentals are) as well as serving in Parliament.

Umm no. If *I* go somewhere in the world and *I* want to communicate with them, *I* should know their language. I was half joking in that post anyways. I feel for the OP, but thought it funny that *he* wanted to communicate to someone and was upset they didn't speak his language.

Why should they make the effort? We are more than happy to accomodate their laziness by making everything bilingual (at a huge taxpayers expense, which is ironic becasue illegals aren't taxed).

Maybe the OP should sit down with their manager but ALSO have them there. So that he can directly translate exactly what you are saying.

In high school there were always groups of asians or mexicans or etc that ONLY spoke their native tongue. Usually it was because they were either new here and wanted to belong or something. A lot of times they will find a group who always speak their native tongue to hang out with and usually hardly ever try learning english. So we cannot make them learn english, get over it.
