Mexican anger over US 'trespass'

Many Mexicans see the border barrier as offensive


Mexico's Congress has condemned what it says is a border violation by US workers building a controversial barrier between the two countries.

Legislators say workers and equipment building a section of the barrier have gone 10 metres (yards) into Mexico. :roll:

The alleged border violation comes ahead of a high-level meeting in the Canadian capital Ottawa.

US, Mexican and Canadian foreign ministers are to discuss border security and trade issues.

Mexican legislators said they had photographs and video, taken on Monday, of the workers and heavy-duty construction equipment that showed them about 10 metres inside Mexico near the border city of Agua Prieta and the town of Douglas, Arizona.

The Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa said she had complained to the US authorities and that the men and equipment had been withdrawn.

Continental trade concerns

In a statement, the US Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza said: "The US is sensitive to Mexican concerns... [and] has the deepest respect for the integrity of the sovereignty of Mexican soil". :roll:

He said US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff had not been in the area of the alleged incursion and recent photographs of him welding a section of the fence had been taken in a different part of Arizona on the US side of the border.

The US says it is building 700 miles (1,125km) of fencing along its border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration.

Many Mexicans see the fence as offensive and say it will be ineffective and potentially cause more deaths in border crossings.

An estimated 1.2 million illegal immigrants were arrested in 2005 trying to cross into the US via the border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

About 11 million Mexicans are thought to live in the US, more than six million of them illegally.

Later on Friday, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is meeting her Canadian and Mexican counterparts - Peter Mackay and Patricia Espinosa - in Ottawa.

They are to discuss concerns that security measures put in place after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US may hamper trade between the three countries.

The officials will also look at co-ordinating responses to emergencies such as a pandemic outbreak of avian flu.

ZOMG! Mexico gets pissed about the US accidentally penetrating 30' into their country yet they have the balls to mention that the wall being built (by people who inadvertently went 10 yards into Mexico) will impede and possibly jeopardize the lives of their citizens trying to sneak into the US illegally.

Ummm... read the quote. We didn't "reclaim" anything. We had men and machinery 10 yards inside Mexican space. Temporarily. The wall was on the right side of the border.

Solution....give the idiots 20 more feet at the border and build the fence a little further in on our territory. Then they can't claims jack standing just the other side of the fence as they are already trespassing.

I think the baby would have to be born in a hospital to get properly recorded with a SSN ... Oh and so that your taxes will also pay for the mother and child since you know she isn't paying anything for the birth of her children... Oh and if it's premature, expect to pay upwards of 100 grand....

I used to live in San Diego, and a few years ago, an original border, marker/stone was unearthed.
It was about 10 miles SOUTH!

This is an issue where we've never had a conservative take the reigns and defend our sovereignty. I fear we never will.

I definitely agree. The 14th Amendment was one of the most well-intentioned, but is now the single most bastardized amendment we have. The simple word 'born' has been used to justify all sorts of jackassery over the years. But, since it's the 'Civil Rights Amendment', it will never be touched - it's sacred property.

OMFG! The US workers have invaded Mexico! Why that's the soil of a sovereign nation! (and thanks to Bush, we now know what sovereign means)

I'll feel bad about this incursion on to Mexican soil, when they start feeling bad (and doing something) about the thousands of daily incursions by their citizens on to US soil.

Anchor Baby law...YES, it needs to be fixed. The child of an ILLEGAL immigrant should NOT be automatically granted US citizenship, nor shoud the child of a LEGAL immigrant, UNLESS the LEGAL immigrrant parents apply for it. (after all, MAYBE they're only planning to be here temporarily, and want the child to be a citizen of whatever country they are from)
