Mexico in general isnt that bad, however I do hear terrible things about Mexico City.

If it were a little less corrupt and it was easier for the average citizen to arm themselves for self defense I would at some point in the future consider buying land or something down there.

I think I read somewhere that Mexico that Mexico is the only other nation where its specifically stated in the consitution that the people have the right to keep and bear arms (not sure if thats true since I never looked it up myself), however in practice you have to jump through a bunch of hoops (bribes and lots of paperwork I would imagine) before they will allow you to. Also legal weapons are restriced to non-military calibers, so no .45, 9mm, 5.56, 7.62.

Mexico City is great- I have lived there 2x, for a year, and for 5 months, and visited my friends
there several times.

Yes, there is a LOT of crime. You must speak decent Spanish to spend more than a few days, although people
are very friendly and will try to speak English to help you (however badly). At night, only
go to where you've been told it's ok, otherwise stay in. Use radio taxis called by the hotel, restaurant, etc., although
the bus is extremely cheap, as is the metro once you figure out the system (cost me like 20 cents 3 years ago).

At the airport they will give you a special voucher/ticket to give to the taxi driver (you buy it at a stand), otherwise he will rip you
off (overcharge) or drop you off for his friends to rob, hehe (the voucher ticket is used to track you and prevent
overcharging, only registered taxis can accept them- non-registered taxis can rob you, leave you in the middle of nowhere.).

The food is great, I live in SD, and there is NO Mexican food here- just norteno/tex mex/cali stuff, not too bad,
but next to nothing compared to real Mexican food.

Make sure to go to Chapultepec, the Pyramids, Bellas Artes, the Zocalo, etc.

If you are an American, just show your passport at the airport to get a 15 day visa- if you ask quickly and nicely before
they fill in the box, they will give you from 30-90 days, sometimes even 180.

I posted some coments in this thread

The 3 things recommended:

1) Learn the language and learn more than just the basics!
2) Bring a passport, don't be lazy or cheap.
3) Use common sense

Do the same in the USA if you are not used to the insane amounts of chlorine you will find in the water.... and enjoy your visits to the "ceramic monster".....

Now, I could invite you to my hometown.... (Amecameca, State of Mexico) We are located only 12 km from the second and third tallest volcanoes in the country. Being that tall, they have perennial snow. The water we drink is the result of the ice melting..... little thread of water become small flow, that become small rivers. Water is collected and then distributed.

Growing as a kid I remember drinking the water and ENJOYING the taste like nothing else (clean, tasty water PLUS fairly new pipes meant awesome taste). I noticed later that the taste was degrading as the municipal goverment had to obey the health secretary regulation of adding chlorine to the water. While not being bad, it surely lost the appeal.

Now, back to topic, DO NOT drink the water. It is not bad, it is just different and your body isn't used to have minimal concentrations of bacteria in it. Nature gave us humans bacteria in our digestive track, but with the extremely high concentration of chlorine in your water, your body lacks such bacteria that keeps the NATURAL balance between the harmful and the useful ones.... Our chlorine concentrations are intended to leave a small portion of the bacteria....

Being used to a different kind of water, the "rinse cycle like" chlorine in the USA water caused me diahrrea very often, not to mention that even caused accelerated hair loss..... nothing that using destillated water could fix!

Just use common sense, and try to find out the because...

The only place I have been in Mexico is Tijuana and if you walked across the border there wasn't even a border guard to check anything. All you did was go through one of those 7 foot revolving turnstiles and you were in. You should definitely have some good ID on you though because you will need to to get back into the US.
