Ok my MX510 mouse is about to bite the dust and I need to start looking for a replacement.

What is the general opinions for LED mice compared to Laser. It laser worth the extra 20 bucks?

I don't know if the laser is worth the extra 20 bucks, but the extra dpi/sensitivity certainly is. I went from an MX700 to the G5 and TBH it was a larger difference than I expected.

Do not get the g5 if you are a low sens fps person. It tracks significantly higher off the mousepad than an led mouse. This makes it much harder to reset the mouse while playing.

Note that the g5 only has a single side button

The g5 has marginally more dpi than the 518 (2000 vs 1600)

Other than that, they are exactly the same

You forgot the 518 looks much cooler

Yeah that's why my G7 annoys me.... Laser is still worth it by a long shot tho

I do like my mx518 becuase: it has forward and backward browser buttons, light weight (like he said, its easier to reset), nice scroll wheel, looks good, I couldnt make a custon molded mouse fit my hand better and is also the reason i bought it.

I don't use the application switch button or the sensitivity switch on the fly.

I don't like it because: the cord is kinda crappy and sticks to my desk- not the braided fabric kind, the feet wore down after six months (easy fix though, and they weren't gonna last forever), and finally it makes a high pitch ringing sound.

Koitsu, an AT member, wrote about the ringing on this page.

Here's the thread.

Cheers

I don't hear any high pitch noise. I'm 15 and I can hear AT LEAST up to 17Khz.

Yikes. I sure do hear it on that WAV file though on that page.

I have an MX518 and I don't have that problem. I have a problem with my disk drives emitting a high pitch whine when my computer starts up.

I've had my MX518 for 7 months now. I'm using a Steelpad QcK mouse pad, but I've had a Fellowes one before. Never had this problem.

Yeah, I tried to be modest about it in my first post, but mine does ring. Every now and then I get kinda slouchy so I'm about a foot away from my desk, and I can hear the ringing then. It's a difficult problem to bring up because not every mouse does it, and some do but the people can't hear it. Mainly, it was just a forewarning for the OP.

Just get the G5. It's worth the investment.

I have both the MX510 and the G5 and the G5 is noticably faster in the highest setting. And I don't hear anything with the scrool wheel.

Edit: NVM I hear the high pitched noise, but you really have to put your ear right next to it.

Look, I know it sounds weird but I actually hear a high pitch noise coming from my mouse. Apparently the scroll wheel causes it. Stick your ear up to a MX510 and tell me that there isn't a high pitched noise coming from it.

To OP, just get the G5 like I said before.

There is some optical sensor thing that detects if the scroll wheel has been moved. It is the PCB that holds this sensor that makes the high pitched noise. Some people have complained that their video card makes a noise and I would assume its the same type of situation. Either way I can hear it, and its not that tight.

I own the MX-518

I prefer it over the G5 just because of the texture of the mouse, two side buttons and the scroll wheel isn't lifted up.

as for the ring on the MX-518 you literary have to put your ear at the bottom of the mouse and listen to hear it

MX 518
8 buttons including a forward button
Cheaper

G5
Only 6 buttons
Higher DPI
Laser
CAn adjust weights : a plus point

I have a 17" CRT on a desktop res at 10X7 and games res of 12X10 and I don't find a problem with the MX 518 @ 800 DPI, I don't even use 1600 DPI, why would I I want more unless it is nearly free or I have too much money. What is wrong with your current mouse?

If you have 20$, go ahead and try the G5. Else visit somebody with each mouse and decide yourself.

I have the MX518 and a friend has the G5 -- the only reason I like my mouse better is because of the two forward and back buttons near where your thumb sits. It makes multi-tasking sooo much easier. Playing a game, well, there is no difference at all (that I can notice). And let's be honest, the MX518 just looks badass!

I find the G5 a better mouse in general, the look, the feel, everything. The price difference is hardly twenty dollars, I got my G5 from newegg for forty-one dollars, great buy... I'd never go back.

Not trying to hijack the thread OP, but I sort of have a related question.

I was looking at the G5 or the G7. Is the G7 ok for gaming, or should I stick with the corded G5? I am probably not a good enough gamer to notice minor lag, but anything major would be annoying.

Thanks, KT

I personally dont think that for low sens users the type of mouse makes a difference at all. I used to play CS on a ball mouse for about 6 months before i finally bought an mx518 (left click died after 3 montsh use) and i currently have a ms Inteli Mouse and it serves me well. I think people are to concerned with accesories, if you're aim is good then your aim is good it wont matter for ****** what mouse you have.

Edit: forgot to put in the other side of the arguement. If you're a high sens user than by all means a high quality laser mouse would be better seeing as you get better tracking with the higher dpi.

OK, second stupid question of the day: what's the difference between a "low sens" user and a "high sens" user? I've never heard those terms before

I think I understand what you are saying, but have no idea which one I am.

Overall, even though the G5 has less buttons then the MX518 I'd still pick the G5. It has a much nicer texture and is more refined. It also uses a real laser which is another plus. On the highest setting on the G5 the speed is insane and the control is excelent.

sens = sensitivity

higher sensitivity means that for the same amount the mouse moves in real life, the more it moves in the game. for example, if you have a very low sensitivity, a 2" movement of the mouse might make you turn about 45º. At a higher sensitivity, a 2" movement of the mouse might make you turn 180º.

Great, thanks for clearing that up.

The G7 IMO has zero noticeable lag. Literally the only thing I dislike is having to swap the batteries every 2 days from the mouse to the charger.

Crap, I thought there was some sort of dock for it where you can just place it when not in use...that would be very useful IMO.

Thanks on the lag question, I will probably go with the G7, NCIX has it for only two dollars more than the G5 right now...seems like a good deal
