Great movie. Just watched it last night. However, ummm, Megatron was never a jet fighter. What the hell was that about?

I like that it's not available on Blu-Ray too.

On Cybertron (their home planet) all the transformers have a secondary flying craft mode of some sort. When they landed on Earth they changed their appearance to look like Earth machines to blend in. In this movie, Megatron crash landed and was instantly frozen. He never had an opportunity to change his appearance. Therefore, he stayed in his cybertron form which included an alien fighter craft he also was seen transforming into a cannon.

oh i remember that. they wanted to make newer toys, so they thought up a new plotline to "explain it," many years later........

Actually, in Megatron's case, they changed his form from the Walther P38 gun to a canon and later a tank and other forms because of laws regarding toy guns. Toy guns had to have special features like an orange tip on the muzzle which didn't really look all that great on the leader of the Decepticons.

Hasbro recently released the Transformers Voyager Classic Megatron which is more like an homage to the original but looks nothing like a real gun....and still has an orange tip.

Try not to be so jaded.

I will agree that some series seem to make things up as they move forward, but not in this case. Apparently you have never seen the pilot episode of Transformers television series.

Episode 1

It doesn't show Megatron as a flying ship, but it does prove that they had alternate appearances on cybertron.

allright guys...let's try and stay calm here..

they're toys. they were fun as hell when I was 6 years old and the transformers show came on after GI Joe. I must have had every GI Joe and between my brother and I, a good 70% of the transformers toys.

again...they're for kids. I grew up with them, most of us here did. point is, I grew up. I can look back, watch some of those cartoons, realize how silly and pathetic the cartoons are and remember how easy life was as a kid. great stuff.

no reason to take it serious. In case you're wondering...transformers will not go down as a pinnacle in story-driven writing. Regardless of the original cartoon's plot, the show existed purely to sell toys in the US. no other reason.

i'm sure the movie is good brianless entertainment. fair enough. it still doesn't change the fact that Michael Bay is garbage when it comes to making movies.

Thing is, I don't typically like Michael Bay movies and I can point to dozens of inconsistencies, plot holes, and other crappy things in Transformers.....but, it doesn't really take away from my overall enjoyment of the film. I suspect this may in part be due to Spielberg's influence as a producer.

It needed more suspense.

I felt like there wasn't enough action and too much BS human stuff going...particularly with the Aussie hacker and Anthony Anderson.

The main problem with the action was that it was filmed in such a way that it was hard to determine what was going on and who was who and what body part was what body part at times.

On that blond hacker...I'm not an expert on accents, but it seemed really, really fake. Either that or she excelled at being incredibly annoying.

Must be excelling at being incredibly annoying because she is an Australian. Link

Date of Birth
11 July 1984, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

Height
5' 8½" (1.74 m)

Trivia

Briefly attended the University of Sydney before deferring her studies to appear on "Headland" (2005).

Her role as "Sasha Forbes" in "Headland" (2005) is the first time she has played a character with her native Australian accent.

Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia but at the age of 16 she moved to Sydney, Australia.

Keeps her native accent in Transformers to emphasize the global scope of the movie.

fun movie, although not as fun or moving as the first animated transformers movie imo.

Michael Bay is an idiot. His movies are nothing but chases and explosions designed to appeal to braindead 14 year olds. He should be a special effects guy, not a director.

well put

too many directors today are essentially overblown special effects guys today, bryan singer another example

I always thought that Bryan Singer underused special effects and concentrated on characters almost to the detriment of his films.

I watched this movie for the first time last night also (regular DVD, upscaled on PS3). It looked great, and the first half or so of the movie was good. However, it devolved into something disappointing toward the end.

Who's not being calm?

OK we get it you don't like Micheal Bay's movies. You have made your point many times in this thread. You have also proven to be the superior being as to know reasons why cartoons are made. Oh my god they are made to sell what? toys? No way! and whats that? people still like them!? and they aren't mindless children!?

Ok now I may not be calm anymore.

The Transformers could have used some work. Bumble Bee a camaro? Megatron a jet fighter? And what about those stupid lips on Optimus Prime? It would have worked so much better with the mouth guard.

Also, with regard to the end of the movie. They were at the Hoover Dam and the city they supposedly ran to looked A LOT like downtown LA. Wasn't it supposed to be a small city anyways?

In the commentary, Bay said that making him a giant gun would have been really dumb because what is a giant gun supposed to do? The proportion was never correct in the cartoons so it would have been impossible to do in a live action movie. I agree.

At one point in the city when him and Optimus are tangling, he does sort of turn into a cannon type thing, then blasts Optimus through a building. Otherwise you never see what kind of form he has. IIRC in the original show, he'd usually turn into the oversized hand cannon and be wielded by either starscream or shockwave. Meh...I found the movie entertaining...they could've done a lot worse with it...he sorta looked like a "flying cannon Cowboy Bebop ship look-alike"...you know, the flying gun?

I know i"m glad that when our military is expecting a full-scale assualt involving jet fighters and a multitude of 50ft tall, weaponized robots, I'd want them to quickly leave a desolate wasteland and immediate get to good-sized, populated metropolitan area.

You have to believe there are massive lost of lives in the final sequence. The movie doesn't address this, which surprised me a bit.
