As to be expected, it's all we'll hear about now for a few days.

probably longer than that... but he wasn't really just "a" celebrity, he was one of the most famous people in the entire world.

Black people also have increased chances at having a cardiac arrest.

that's not entirely true...

black americans are... however, if you go to finland, blacks have lower rates of heart disease than whites. it's mainly because black people in the united states have such shitty diets because more black people are less well-off than white people. less money = crappier diets and no healthcare = increased rates of obesity and heart disease.

That's not exactly true. Having less money doesn't neccessarily equate with a poorer diet. Many wealthy people eat horribly. Although socioeconomic status may play a part, much of the blame is culteral as well. Bad food is bad food for eveyone, regardless of race (McD, etc).

It occurs to me he was more like a business institution.
"IT" employed a lot of people, funded a lot of charities.
Almost like losing a mini GM or other financial institution.
I wonder how many will in the music industry and entertainment
industry this will effect.
Any individual that can generate millions and billions, their death has
to have a ripple effect to some extent.
His upcoming London concert alone had sold over one million tickets.

It shows the absolute obsession our society has with infotainment as opposed to news.

Admittedly his death was unexpected and a legit major news story. But last night I was flipping through the channels. ALL the cable news channels (even Fox) were doing nonstop obsessive coverage of Jackson's death. NBC and ABC were having specials on it. MTV was actually, for once, playing music videos as both MTV and VH1 were nonstop Jackson music videos.

Heck, even the business channel-CNBC-was in on the Jackson bandwagon.

It reminded me of back when RFK, Jr. died. If only that energy could be focused on something useful.

He was a good singer and dancer at one time. Then he became a lover of children. It is hard to tell how sick and twisted a person can become when they have a little money.

Stay classy.

Also, did you know the difference between MJ and a grocery bag?
One is white, made of plastic and dangerous for kids to play with, the other is to take groceries home...

Jokes aside, he was a good entertainer - though not my style. RIP.

My reaction is the same as most people's: He was a fantastic entertainer, but his weirdness was as extreme as his talent. However, weird people are okay with me, and it's sad to see him die so young.

That said, can someone please explain "Rest In Peace" to me? What, exactly, does it mean? And what's the alternative?

well there's a thin line between genius and madness, is it any wonder alot of extremely talented people also suffer from some kind of mental issue? They're both extremes of the psychological spectrum, u can't be "normal" if u're extremely talented.

anyways, interesting news is the internet almost crashed w/ all the searches for MJ:

a priest, a teacher, & a lawyer are sinking on a cruise ship and they're struggling to get a life raft. The teacher says "hey maybe we should let the kids on the life raft first?" The lawyer says "hell no "f**k the kids!" to which the priest replies "you really think we'd have time??"

rofl love that one!

Most crave the spotlight. If not on them, they find a way toget it.

He could have bailed from the scene anytime - his kept on doing stunts for publicity.
Media whore and never really took life seriously..

it's a very common correlation. healthy food is expensive. cheap food is not. for example, fresh meat and produce = $$$, ramen noodles and hot dogs = $. but, yeah, culture plays a huge role.

many people in upper and upper middle classes have personal trainers and have the money to spend on a healthy diet. your average black family does not (hispanics too, for that matter). just like obama said, the trend is that most hispanics and blacks have lower economic status which becomes magnified when the nation's economy get worse.
