For a little background reading I suggest you start with the Bill of Rights that ought to get you started. Never mind the fact that the official stance of the academy is what I espoused above (as stated by one of the organiziers of the event last night on the ABC nightly news)

Actually, the only thing that matters is the Academy's official stance. In this case, Moore was entirely within his rights since the Academy's policy is to allow a winner to speak on whatever he wishes. However, if the Academy had a policy saying that there was to be no politicising in the acceptance speeches then it would have been right and proper to have cut Moore off. Free speech guarantees you only the right to express your views on your own time and in a place that is either public or owned by you. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to spout your views anywhere you see fit. If it were against the Academy's policies, then Moore would have had zero right to politicise in his speech. He can't force the Academy to give him the podium and the publicity unless they want to give it to him.
