About this. People asked for stuff at Lowe's before; I'm guessing because I was staring at the nuts and bolt section trying to figure out the asinine non-metric sizing.

Although in honesty this is just them playing the narrative to what they see their core voters to be. They're not dumb people, certainly not dumb enough to make these statements without considering the very high possibility this has to do with Michelle's heigh rather than race.

Bad democratic strategy IMO, you're essentially catering to far left loonies (lefty white kids that need to protest shit, because middle class life in the 'burbs is boring etc) - republicans did same with the Tea Party nuts and look where it got them. Shortsighted strategy is short sighted.

Why is it a bad strategy? They are succeeding at creating the decisiveness they want and attempting to paint the right into the corner of racists to make them feel bad about themselves. This'll get more to vote D because they don't want to feel racist or seem racist in front of their friends.

What if the fear that somebody is out to paint you in a corner as a racist so you feel bad about yourself has already happened, that you already hate yourself and just don't know it. Do you know what projection as applied in psychology is? If you don't know that you hate yourself and you actually do, but unconsciously, you will experience paranoia, the feeling that the world is out to make you feel bad. You might even read this that way. With me so far? Are you starting to feel suspicious? Hehe. If you are anything like me, and I would bet on it, you will want to have a huge ego to protect yourself from those feelings, and use as much intelligence as you can, which in your case is quite a lot, to create rationalizations as to why this can't be so.

I remember when I was younger and struggling with identity issues, my first contact with a psychologist where he told me I was being defensive. I told him I was not. It was such a classic that I eventually saw it. Good luck to you.

Is there anyone you think doesn't secretly hate themselves?

You know what, I hate when people get the door for me. As a white person, it makes me feel too privileged.

The more you trivialize the issue with hypothetical anecdotes, the more you show how far we have to go. Why is it so hard to accept?

White people have such a huge problem accepting the undeniable fact that racism permeates our society. None of us were there and could hear the tone of voice this woman used when she asked the wife of the most important man on earth to get her that box of cereal. And no, it isn't normal to just ask any person over 5'10" to be your attendant. Thats retarded, and the posters that said that are either retarded or liars.

1.) The lady didn't know she was the first lady.
2.) Why does it matter that she's the first lady? She went to target incognito.
3.) These stories trivialize racism.
4.) Normal/Tall people are often asked to get things down for short people. Everyday occurrence.

What is interesting is that Michelle thought anything of it. It shows how sheltered she has been throughout life if she has never been asked to help someone at the store reach a high object. That is a normal thing that happens to normal people that go out and buy their own groceries or do their own shopping.

No one has ever equated this common courtesy to racism before. It is ridiculous.

This should be emphasized. It is an everyday occurrence unless you're a particularly short person.

I've never seen anyone refuse to assist when asked. It's common courtesy to help the person asking -- who is shorter than you, older than you, or handicapped in some way (or maybe you're just standing in the best spot to reach for a particular thing).

Unless you're a particularly short person? That just means the role is reversed - you're the one asking instead of being asked Point being YES! Everyone gets this daily!

This is a good point, I'm not friendly.

I still think you guys are nit-picking details that are pretty much unknowable. Whether or not it was racism in that instance doesn't change the greater state of race relations in the US. She is drawing attention to a real problem.

She is nit picking, not us! No one is saying racism isn't still an issue in the US. It is. But our leaders trying to turn random stuff into racism is not acceptable, which is why people are upset with Michelle.

It's not an "everyday occurrence" as in YOU hear it everyday. It's an everyday occurrence as in this happens to your average person daily. Does it happen to you daily? Of course not, especially when your socially retarded self doesn't step outside - it's kind of impossible.

To the average person? Yes, it's very possible.

I don't think that white people have a problem seeing racism, I think white people have a problem when people blame racism for everything.

I had a coworker who was a fucking jackass. He thought he was God's Gift To Finance. In all aspects. He thought he knew everything. But how dare you question his knowledge or stymie his advancement. You do that and you're a racist. In fact, he called 4 people racist, including a 22yr old intern that he met 5mins before. Why did he think 4 people were racist? Because he was a racist.

People see what they want to see and even worse, they will tell others what they saw in order to score political points or advance their careers.

Look at that chick out in LA that was caught fucking her boyfriend. She cried racism right away and then was later denounced. Look at Sharpton, racism everywhere. Yet when he talked about "hymietown", nobody continues to call him on it.

I think most people genuinely want to just like people without regard for race, especially these days. However, I think many are turned off of by shit like Mike Brown. He was an idiot wannabe-badass that picked a fight, period. Denounce him and move on. But for goodness sake, don't elevate him to sainthood.

I'm 6'2" and I have gotten it many times. Probably 2 dozen times over 30+ years. Maybe you look like a fucking asshole.

So... the answer is to not talk to anyone we don't know for the off-chance someone will take the contact as a sign of racism?

I know I have easily been asked a dozen times myself and I am only 5'10". It actually just happened to me this month. Sounds to me like he would respond by "Fuck off lady" if someone even asked pardon me.

I don't believe you.

She's drawing attention to a real problem by using a personal anecdote that very clearly isn't part of the real problem. It encourages people to see the problem where it doesn't exist. I find it not only distracting from the actual real problem, but also divisive and counter-productive toward dealing with the real problem.

In other words, this is the kind of thing one might say if their intention was to perpetuate and encourage the problem so that they could exploit it for political gain.

But if you refuse to talk to somebody, there is a chance that that will be taken as a sign of racism. There is no win in this game.

If I ever wear a dress shirt at any store, people are a lot more likely to think I work there. I will often being wearing a dress shirt at stores because I often shop straight from work. I've been mistaken for staff at Target many times even though I wasn't wearing a red shirt which just goes to show you how stupid most people are because real target employees dress in a very particular way and it's not the way I usually dress. Michele Obama's complaint is stupid.

Same. Often the only time I have to shop is IMMEDIATELY after work It sucks. I'm mistaken for management on more than 1 occasion.

Why would anyone read stories from 'the blaze' in the first place?

Barack Obama was a black man that lived on the South Side of Chicago, who had his share of troubles catching cabs.

BTW-This is real. Try to catch a cab in NYC if you're a black man.

Did every cab company hire white supremacists as CEOs to tell the black and brown cab drivers not to pick up black passengers or is it undefinable institutional racism?

Presumable in the free market a cab company could be making a killing picking up all of these black professionals in Democrat-controlled metropolises who aren't being picked up by any other cab company. I mean you could really form a massive monopoly here and be making insane profits.
