Once again, in the final minute of the game, the refs manage to have a serious impact on ultimately who "won" the game.
on ESPN.com, the article covering the Penn State - Michigan game this past Saturday ( http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=252870130&confId=null ) contains this statement:
ummmm, NO!!!!, made enough plays??!?!? had just enough time??!?!?! No, the Wolverines did NEITHER.
MADE ENOUGH PLAYS:
no, with 42 seconds left in the game, Michigan QB Henne throws a 17-yard first down sideline pass to Avant. That play SHOULD NOT HAVE STOOD! The replay clearly showed the receiver's heel coming down on the white paint of the sideline. Did the officials review???? noooooooooooooooooooo, NO, of COURSE NOT! Why would they review THAT! THAT was in Michigan's FAVOR to let'em get away with that!!!! So, as usual, Penn State is playing against the opposing team AND the refs.
HAD JUST ENOUGH TIME:
No, Michigan didn't have that either. At the end of a Michigan play with about 30 seconds left on the clock, Michigan calls a timeout, and it gets called officially at 28 seconds. But thanks to Lloyd Carr who argued and begged and pleaded with the officials until they relented and had the clock operator "reset the game clock to 0:30", Michigan got 2 extra seconds. No big deal, right? what's 2 seconds? Yeah, well, with 1 second left on the clock at the end of the game, Michigan threw a touchdown pass to "win" the game.
So, in conclusion, congratulations to Michigan...it must be nice to "play" football like you're at Burger King, where you can get it your way.
And a big round of applause to the Big Ten officiating crew at that game, who managed to remain undefeated, and who without even so much as blinking an eye, managed to completely alter the national championship landscape for the 2005 season.
*** EDIT: ***
oh yes, and after the wolverines (and the refs) managed to hand PSU its first loss of the season, I'd like to take this opportunity to borrow this beautiful piece of music from our fellow Big10 members, the OSU Buckeyes, and adapt it slightly:

The Wolverines then made just enough plays and had just enough time to earn the victory they -- and a much-maligned Carr -- desperately needed.
