I picked up the Power Inverter yesterday, figured I could use it to power my laptop (w/DVD) on long car trips -- anyone else used one of these to power a laptop in your car, and does it work OK?

Also got the SMC router -- excellent router, I like it for the print server feature, and have installed my own plus one for my brother. I bought this one as a backup, which is probably a stupid purchase, so I'll likely return it. BTW, MicroCenter had tons of both left, although the item I went for (a case + 250w PS) was sold out.

I noticed that MicroCenter is also one of the few megahaus chainstores that is starting to carry serious computer mod gear -- a whole aisle is now dedicated to various fans, rounded IDE cables, thermal compound, etc. Much more so than CompUSA.

I picked up a PS/2, 5 button, dual wheel, optical mouse for less than ten bucks after taxes @ the Chicago Microcenter location. It's an Aopen O-35G

SMC does make good routers. I have a SMC 7004BR, the older model, have the newest firmware. They released some new firmware that allows packet routing, but have since pulled it off their website. So I have a $50 router (got it over a year ago) that can do packet routing..whee

do you have a link to that firmware still? I'd be interested in receiving a copy of it from you. If I understand, your model is the 5432 5 volt model and the newer model is something like 5702 or something thats a 12 volt model.

Thanks

Good point, this was the only local store in Cols. that carried a ThermalTake fan I wanted, not to mention the Antec power supply. CompUSA sells just a load of "entry level" trash.

I have the older 7004BR model that has worked great. I play Counterstrike and never have had a problem. I have considered upgrading to the 7004abr but I think i'll wait for the 7004FW. Take a look:

Went to Microcenter yesterday and found this SMC Barricade 4-port router 7004ABR - 39.99 after $30 MIR. It took me around 20 min to install and it worked fine. But not soon after I found I can't login my yahoo email and some other websites. After I upgrade firmware to 10.41xxx(the old version is 10.01xxx June 2001 one), everything is OK then. The new firmware is on their website, just go to http://192.xxxxxx as described in the manual and upgrade firmware. Be careful to choose correct modle no. Mine is 5432

Dethman, the power inverter is about the length + width of a PDA (e.g., a Palm), but about 3-4 times as thick (like a small brick), and it is relatively heavy. It's advertised for use in cars and boats -- don't know if it's appropriate for airline use, but I suspect not. It's designed to have one end plugged into a standard 12 v DC outlet (like the cigarette lighter adapter in most cars), and the other end is the brick with two standard 3-prong AC outlets. You plug the laptop (or other power consuming device) into the 3-prong outlet.

I think there are special adapters designed for use on planes, but those are only helpful if the plane has outlets at each seat (and in those relatively few planes that do have outlets, they're often in business/first class seating only, I think).

So the SMC 7004ABR router has two rebates, a $10 one and a $30 one. Does anyone know if both of these can be used? It says you need the original UPC for each one, so I'm assuming I can only use the $30 one? Does anyone understand why there is a $10 if you can't use it along with the $30? Thanks if anyone can help me clear the fog obscuring my mind from understanding things...

I only saw one $30 rebate at MicroCenter's website so can't answer your question but I do know this:
The rebate they use is through TCA at New Rochelle, NY, which has a reeeeeeeeeeeeeal bad reputation. For those who're jumping on this deal Please photocopy all documents you send in, and log the date and everything you do with this rebate.

Does this one offer DHCP and NAT so that you can use multiple computer with the same IP?
Yes it does; that's what a router is for.

I found a decent deal for basic DV editing at the local Microcenter. They have the Pyro BasicDV kit which includes a 3-port firewire card, cable and Ulead Video Studio 5 software for only $24.95. The firewire card is based on the Ti chipset and is OHCI-compliant. Windows XP automatically recognized the card and so far it works great with my ZR45 camcorder. BTW, the same deal is available online as well.

Yes this offers DHCP and NAT,
I have used the 7004br with both cable and DSL.
It supports PPPoE, to allow it sign in to your DSL connection, and give you true "always on" and let your share your connection with multiple PC's

If anyone has tried using MS Internet Connection Sharing, you will know what a pain it is.
It took me less than five minutes to set up the router both times.

Definately a deal.

Yeah the router kicks ass. I have the 7004BR and got the new 1.95 firmware with UPNP support and it rocks! Finally can get messenger working w/o DMZ

I'd recommand SMC7004ABR too; I've had it for more than a year now and it NEVER gives me any problem. All the outages I had were on my ISP's side.
Also, their tech support replied my email within resonable time frame.

Cooky,
Here is the link where I found the two rebates.

--Is the risk with SMC's rebate company worth it, or should I go for the Dlink router?

The $30 rebate is for MicroCenter and $10 rebate is for MicroWarehouse. Unless they're actually the same company, I don't think you can use both rebates.

I bought the 7004ABR a while ago and I did get my rebate check. (not wihin 10 weeks as advertised though) I've heard people have bad experience w/ DLink routers so you should ask yourself if rebate or the router itself is more important. For me I'd rather spend a little more money/effort for the better router.

<< anyone else used one of these to power a laptop in your car, and does it work OK? >>

I don't have the "Jazz" brand power inverter, but I have a 300 watt power inverter with two plugs and it powers my notebook just fine on trips. Hook the notebook up to the cell phone and you have (slow) Internet access all the way there! One slight disappointment to me was the fact that the 300 watt inverters often have an internal fan which is a little louder than I would like. The single-plug inverters typically don't have a fan and probably are adequate for most people's needs.
