I like MC better than Fry's.

Was going to say the same thing.
While Microcenter doesn't have the vast selection of stuff, Fry's does, MC focuses more on quality parts, where as Fry's is the walmart or electronics.

It doesn't help thought that there is a Microcenter and 3 Fry's within 30 minutes of me.

They sold that at more than a slight loss. From what I understand, there's almost no markup on Apple products (have a look at why Costco is ditching them). They took a bath on that one, but they kept a customer, which few stores recognize as important anymore. I'm glad we have a MC in Northern VA too.

I'm not saying you should have or anything, but I probably would've split the difference with the manager and just taken $50 off or something. I guess customer service is so foreign to me these days that I'd appreciate the gesture more than the discount.

Maybe Fry's is just that massive (never saw one IRL) but the MC near me has got damn near 5 varieties of everything. I mean this place is like a real life Newegg. If it's something you can order for your PC, they probably have it.

Once you go in, that's it. You are hooked. Prepare to spend hours browsing the store looking for items marked with yellow tags (specials) or returned junk.

I ordered a $499 16GB iPad for the SO with the "in-store pickup" option. Get a confirmation that item is ready.

Show up to store - item is not ready. They are out of 16GB iPads. They apologize, and say that they aren't even allowed to confirm online sales due to Apple restrictions.

Store general manager comes over to me and gives two options:

32GB for the 16GB price ($499)

Or the 64GB for the 32GB price ($599).

I jumped on the 64. My SO will google it the next morning, and I will look like a hero.

Thank you Microcenter. You could have easily told me to fuck off instead of taking off $100.
she probably gonna say "dude, ipad2 is going to be out in a month!!!"

Nice deal

I miss the Vienna/Fairfax Microcenter. I now have the Saint Louis Park one that's a lil farther from my place than that one was.

Around my way, there is Best Buy in Totowa and also in Riverdale, we have no Fry's that I know of. But we do have a Microcenter on RT#20 North about 1/8 mile north of RT#80 (Lowes and also Pep Boys is in there)

This is the only way I can give asize comparo.:
Microcenter

Fry's

Fry's is about 2x as large as microcenter, and jam packed with crap. Though Fry's carries movies, music, games, appliances, ect.

Fry's sells all sorts of electronics, components and appliances where as MC mostly sell Computer related products. Also MC doesn't have Door Nazi's and isn't staffed by FOB's who barely speak English (Might have changed, haven't been to a Fry's in over 7 years)

I love MC too. I have a Fry's and MC within a few miles of each other and I've been going to Fry's less and MC more.

Their prices are competitive and the ability to go in and out is pretty nice.

I was a bit behind on the I7/I5 generation of chips and the sales guy got me up to speed on the ram types, mobo's, overclocking etc.

I've heard plenty of bad advioce given out at Fry's in the past. Even the Chuckleheads that work at BB seemed more informed.

Fry's is large, but computer junk is just a small part of their sales floor space. Large appliances (washers, refrigerators, etc.), home theater, huge DVD, CD section, car stereo, small appliances (vacuums, coffee makers, etc.) make up much more of their sales floor space than computer crap does. Fry's is more like Best Buy with a decent-to-great computer component section thrown in.

BUT.....MicroCenter doesn't have the reputation of repacking returned memory and cpus and reselling them as new (Fyr's is terrible about this....have had to return more than a couple of each due to them being a used item) that Fry's does.

And since the "scandal" that happened a couple of years ago with the head buyer for computer purchasing, the cpu/mb combos have really decreased in volume and savings.....rarely do you see the weekly ECS/whatever cpu combo for the price of the cpu alone that used to be a staple of Fry's. Now, MC simply has better cpu prices...by far.

And, try to look at Fry's cpus for lot number, stepping, etc. Won't happen. MicroCenter, on the other hand, has always had the vast majority of their cpus sitting out, easily seen for any discriminator you care to use to weed them out....build date, lot, stepping, etc. And if the one you want to look at isn't on the shelf, they'll go get them until you find the one you want.....and smile the whole time.

Not to mention you're not treated like a scammer/criminal when you return something to Microcenter, unlike Fry's.

Then there's the whole heatsink/fan selection. Fry's is horrible....MC, much better. And MC has at least a decent selection of watercooling supplies....Fry's, nothing outside a couple of kits.

Also MC doesn't have Door Nazi's and isn't staffed by FOB's who barely speak English (Might have changed, haven't been to a Fry's in over 7 years)

Nothing's changed at all. Either FOB's or kids who either don't know jack about the product they're there to sell, or start belittling the customer because they're buying an Intel processor instead of the AMD the sales kid thinks is vastly superior.

I frequent two MC's and two Fry's, both in ATL. I bypass Fry's in favor of MC almost every time. Try to get one Fry's to call the other to hold the last remaining item so you can get over there to buy it......you won't. MC.....they're more than happy to do it.

Fry's is great if you are a noob to either store. MC is for the smarter shopper......and are fed up with Fry's shenanigans.

I bought a Kingston jump drive that went bad. I returned it to the store and they were out so they gave me one of their generic drives and told me it was just as good if not better. I took it home and it wouldn't configure for ready boost in Windows 7.

I got on the phone and raised hell. The assistant manager got in his car and drove to my house to bring me a replacement drive.

MicroCenter is really quite good, it's nice to have a proper big computer store around. Ever since CompUSA shutdown your choice for obscure stuff has been either insanely overpriced mom & pop shops or MicroCenter. MC is overpriced on a few things, but on a lot of other stuff their prices are incredibly good. Their returned items table is great. Got two 1GB DDR2 SoDIMMs for $10 each a while back when the new one were selling for $15. Work just fine, no issues at all.

I also use the Madison Heights store, and that is exactly my description to unwitting victims: it's a real life Newegg. Pretty good hike for me but I still go there pretty often when in need of something--the prices are right in line with online shopping and you get it immediately.

a little OT, but the reason Costco is ditching Apple is because Apply REQUIRES a markup, which Costco refuses to do, thus ruining Apple's expensive image. Costco is a wholesaler who's internal policy limits markup to 10% or less.
