Yeah, that is why there were tons of DVD's being sold at PS2 launch, but no games, since it had jack for software. They are finally getting some good stuff, but they should have had some better games available during their launch phase.

Remember the headline?

<< The Matrix DVD Is The Best Selling PS2 Launch Title >>

If it dies, SWEET! That means I can get an Xbox for $60 just like I did with DC!
Maybe I'll wait on getting an import copy of Shenmue2

definitely agree with that. PSX had a much better game selection at launch

IIRC it was not that even. Sony usually had approx a 2million console lead over saturn, which of course widened tremendously after certain titles were released.

I beg to differ. Each has their own strengths and cater to their market, i.e. RPG's, FPS', etc.

well I'd get one if it was cheaper.

The games look cool but has no Tekken and the fact that I don't really game much is the main problem. It would still be cool to have. I 'use' to be a hardcor console gamer. I have a ps2 and I own you all at TTT and GT3!!!

<< Actually the installed PS2 user base is more around 7million in the North American market. Xbox's is over 2million. >>

It's Playstation 2: 8.3 million, Xbox: 1.8 million, Gamecube 1.5 million.

GBA is at 5.9 million, but it isn't really a competitor to consoles.

This topic is rubbish. The PS2 is a great system, but if anything goes the way of the Dreamcast it will be the Gamecube. The Xbox is still selling strong and as far as games go, it is keeping up with the PS2. During this time of the year very few good games come out for the consoles and sales are lower than ever.

I work at Electronics Boutique, so I can give you first hand experience and figures on how the three systems do. I'll give you a rundown on the sales of the systems and their games...

November-December

Xbox preorders top at 104 at my store, with Gamecube preorders topping at 32. Similar numbers are reported across my district. Once the two consoles were released, we never ran out of Xbox, but we were re-supplied every 2 days with shipments of about 40-60. The day of the Xbox release was bigger than any day ever for my store. We made net sales of $22,000 on the Xbox's release. We sold our initial pre-order shipment of 32 GC's along with 4 non-presold within the first two days - the net sales were just under $6000 on the day of GC's release (which was a Sunday, WTF was Nintendo thinking?). We received a shipment of 12 GCs one week later. We didn't see another Gamecube until one week before Christmas. All the while Sony and MS are pumping out PS2 and Xbox. Despite EB only selling Xbox bundled with 3 games and an accessory we continue to keep the sales near the PS2. Nintendo continues to flop, and the associates in the stores start spreading more love for MS and Sony. Nintendo gets a boost of sales from Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin, but we still have no systems to sell.

January-March

When Christmas is over we finally see a large (well, by Nintendo standards) shipment of 24 GC's. At this point we are actually all out of stock of Xbox and PS2, but quickly receive more within the first week of January. January is a slower month, but still the biggest for us until August or so. People redeem their Gift Cards and spend their Christmas money and continue to buy Xbox and PS2. Overall customer reaction to Xbox's games is rather good, and by far the biggest sellers are Halo, NFL Fever, and DOA 3. PS2 is still selling Grand Theft Auto 3 like hotcakes with FFX, Madden 2002, and Gran Turismo 3. The expected giant seller, Metal Gear Solid 2, didn't do so well in our area. It sold very well for the first week of its release, but sales quickly dropped.

At this point, Sony halts shipments of their memory cards and all third-party memory cards. Most of us assume it is just a massive sell-out from Chirstmas. When February rolls around, this starts to put a small dent into Sony's near-flawless armor. We warn people that they cannot save games for their PS2 unless they can find a memory card, but there NONE within a 50 mile radius. Every Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, Babbage's, K-Mart, Best Buy, and Circuit City were out of stock of PS2 memory cards for months (and still are for that matter). People were warned and several purchased Xbox instead. Electronics Boutique saw a rather large trade-in of PS2s for Xbox as well.

We recently received the numbers of the company's performance as of March 31st. I have no problem posting the company's numbers for you guys. This may give you an indication on how well the three systems have done. This numbers are a percentage of the overall sales we had as a company.

PSone and PS2 hardware - 8%
Xbox hardware - 5%
Gamecube and N64 hardware - 1.7%

PS2 software - 20%
Xbox software - 15%
PC software - 12% (threw this in to give you guys an idea of how the PC is faring in the console wars)
Gamecube software - 9%
DVD - 6%

whoever said that how a console does in japan does not matter is an idiot. considering the best game developers are all from japan, you better hope your system does well there. know what you're talking about before you make yourself look like a fool.

the xbox is a great system in that it is a powerful machine, but the beauty of the ps2 controller and the great library of games makes it easily my favorite right now. i wouldn't mind if the xbox were to die... but thats also because i spent all my money on ps2 games

<< Microsoft-owned MSNBC is carrying an article that talks about how PS2 is far and away more successful than the Xbox in the marketplace, consumers are not buying Xbox products, retailers are not stocking the console, and that it is basically doomed to failure. There are quotes to that effect from retailers and analysts, including Goldman Sachs.

That this article is published by a Microsoft-owned website is all the more important. This is an admission of absolute failure by Microsoft itself.

Time to sell off that Xbox while you still can!

Here is a link to the article and some discussion about the topic.
>>

Or maybe MSNBC is trying to be a legitimate news source. Or would you rather MSNBC be a big brainwashing tool at MS's disposal?

agreed. which can lead to cheap consoles and games ala the dreamcast.

so far i spent a little over $700 on my PS2, and i barely have 10 games with mem card, 2 controllers, mulitap, vertical stand, dvd remote.

i spend about $475 on the dreamcast and i got 20+ legit games, 4 controllers, fishing controller, maracas, 4 VMUs, microphone, and many more. dreamcast was such a deal.

Valinos - Very interesting report. I didn't think the Xbox was doing that well.
BTW, why the drop in memory cards from Sony? What happened? I've heard of it but didn't really care much about it until I got my PS2 a couple days ago.

<< What's the hype about X-Box anyway? Look at this comparison:

X-Box:
Graphics - OK
Speed - <1GHz
Sound - Good
Ease of use - Very good
Future upgrade - :Q

PC:
Graphics - Much better than X-Box
Speed - Usually >1GHz
Sound - You set the limit
Future upgrade -

Edit: Initial table looked like :disgust:

You're a idiot. You can't compare consoles to a PC. They're for a different purpose. Can you get 3 friends on the couch around your computer to play football? It would probably suck if you could. Can you get any decent fighting games for the PC?

Go away.
>>

Would I want to snuggle up to male friends to play football games (Who'd want to play that crap anyway? Guess the same guys who love to snuggle up to their male friends...) ? Are there any fighting games that are even remotely interesting? No.

Can I mod an X-Box? Will it be still state-of-the-art technology 2 days after release? Can I upgrade it easily to make it state-of-the-art again? No.

Does it have Wolfenstein, CS or something like that with decent controls, internet play and sh!tloads of servers? Wouldn't know, but not from what I've heard so far.

Can I do more with it than just play games? No.

P.S. What's so bad about sh!t that it needs censoring?

Sometimes football is enjoyed indoors. Especially up here in Minnesota. And don't tell me it's fun to play outside in the snow everday

<< Can I mod an X-Box? >>

I suppose. Be the first to put a neon light and fiberglass window in it

<< Will it be still state-of-the-art technology 2 days after release? >>

Depends on what you call state of the art. It's the most powerful gaming console released to date. And this is how many months after release.

<< Can I upgrade it easily to make it state-of-the-art again? No. >>

You're correct.

<< Does it have Wolfenstein, CS or something like that with decent controls, internet play and sh!tloads of servers? Wouldn't know, but not from what I've heard so far. >>

Not sure how MSFT is going to offer their internet connection. Should be interesting to see. Too bad I won't since I'm stuck on dialup.

<< Can I do more with it than just play games? No. >>

You're correct again. Though that little console only costs $300. As stated before in this thread, I'd like to see a $300 computer rig play those games you've mentioned

whats your point, are upgrades free? i think not, you pay out of your ass for what you get. anyways, those points are true about any console. plug and play ease of use makes for some sacrifices. but then again there are many games you can't get for pc and cost is a big factor. would i want to play a mario type game on a computer? not likely. artificially limiting yourself because you don't have enough money for both is a bad arguement against something cs? no ones going to play a game like cs on a console, but also no ones going to make a decent fighting game for the pc. rpgs, racing games. its entirely different. optimally you own both.

not to mention "state of the art" pc features aren't actually used by software and games anywhere near immediately. to make money they must make games that support a wide range of pc systems, which gnenerally leads to sacrifices and time wasted

as someone else said, gaming on a pc is a rather personal thing. consoles allow for more of a group activity.

your arguement against consoles is that your homophobic?

lol, that i would love to see maybe toss in a neon or black light while your at it. a 120mm fan to keep everything nice and cool

The moment the next game arrives, with higher demands, X-Box will suddenly seem too slow again, while you can just upgrade a PC.

<<

<< Does it have Wolfenstein, CS or something like that with decent controls, internet play and sh!tloads of servers? Wouldn't know, but not from what I've heard so far. >>

Not sure how MSFT is going to offer their internet connection. Should be interesting to see. Too bad I won't since I'm stuck on dialup.

Can you easily set up your own servers? Does it allow people to set up a 64 player server on their X-Box without rendering it unplayable?

But I WANT to do more than just play games. I have a PC for that purpose anyway, and therefor spending a bit more on the PC to keep it up to date is cheaper than to buy a new console every time I want to play a new game. (Don't buy games that often, and I ain't buying one just for Halo)

Loads of people here to video editing and stuff like that. That requires:
- A decent video card
- A decent soundcard
- Loads of memory
- A fast harddisk
- A fast processor
Now if you have that anyway, why would you not use it for playing games too?

Quite annoying too, you can use all kinds of crap like 'n*gger' or 'ch*nk' without censorship (Although doing so a bit too much will get you a vacation), but you arent allowed to say 'sh!tloads'.

Thats utter bull. Sony makes @$$loads of money from their camcorders and digital cameras. Why? Because all of their accessories are extremely proprietary and cost an arm and a leg while people still buy the camcorders because they possibly the best out there feature and performance-wise(I have to grudgingly admit this is true, even though their stuff can be ridiculously expensive at times)
