Micron Memory....maybe not....

Hello all! I recently purchased all the components to build my new system. An ABIT KT7A Motherboard, Duron 850 CPU, 128 Meg PC 133 Micron memory, Soundblaster LIVE! Value, D-Link Ethernet card, Windows 98SE, And a MSI Geoforce2 MX (No video out).
I've had numerous system errors, and have eventually tracked it down to memory problems. By changing my settings, I've achieved some stability, but running my memory at 133 MHZ (HST CLK+ PCI CLK) causes serious instability problems when I try to enable any enhanced memory features. (4-way interleave, fast page mode, fast/turbo settings). I have tried any advice I've read ...(Changing voltage, changing slots..etc). Upon talking to technical support at Crucial Technology, they informed me that the number is a component number only, and that it's probably not even a Micron module. What the heck?? Did the computer shop that sold me the "micron" chip lie to me? Does anyone who has a genuine Micron chip have a capitalized "M" followed by a slightly raised "T" in their component number? Is this a truely Third Party Crap chip that should never be used in my system. Arrrrrr......

I bought my Micron RAM from Crucial and the chip label does begin with an M followed by a slightly raised T as you describe. There are many third party memory suppliers who use Micron chips, but the PCB specs vary and greatly affect the performance --- even when the memory modules are the same. Sounds like you got Micron chips on a third party PCB. In other words you have Micron chips, but not a Micron memory module (stick) and the performance may be much different than what the chips are capable of.

Running your memory at "Host CLK + PCI CLK" is essentially running your memory at 166MHz. It's PC133, so what do you expect? 133MHz + 33MHz is the PCI bus speed, therefore, it looks like you are trying to run it at 166MHz. It takes some very good ram to pull that off.

but i thought Durons run at 100FSB. So that would be 100 + 33 = 133. Which would be fine?

cpu and memory can run at asychronus speed if the chipset supports that.
so you can run 100 fsb duron system at either
cpu 100, memory 100
or cpu 100, memory 133
or cpu 133, memory 133 (possible on KT133A mb)

To run Duron at 133 you need to unlock the processor as described on the Anandtech and other sites and adjust the multiplier setting. As it is, if you really are running 133FSB, then the processor is running at 8.5x133, which may be outside its capability.
re.RAM--as others pointed out, generic SDRAM mfrs often use Micron silicon on their modules. If you want all Micron, chips and module, you need to buy Crucial brand.

To clarify.....
I am running my Duron at 100 MHz FSB. The Pci value is 1/3 or 33 MHz. Memory is running at 133 MHz. (100Mhz clk + 33 Mhz PCI clk). Haven't tried to overclock yet...trying to get my system stable first! Odd thing...tried running my memory at 100MHz....won't run without freezeups in Windows unless I boost the IVo to 3.5 volts. Hmmmm....
