Microphone issues

I'm sitting here with 2 different Logitech headsets, one USB, the other analog. XP64 machine, Biostar T550 SE with the Realtek onboard high def audio. All sound drivers are up to date. I have to basically have to shout or tilt the headset so the mic is directly in front of my mouth to get any sound to go through.

Well, I went to return the analog one to Staples, and just for the heck of it I tried to record something on one of their laptops while I was there. Naturally, it worked perfectly. I came through crystal clear on the recording, without having to scream like an idiot. So obviously the headset works.

All the volume sliders in my sound settings are pegged. I used 2 different types of inputs with the same results so a bad analog jack isn't my problem. What in the world is the issue here?

Hmm okay, just tested it in warcraft and they can kinda hear me, if I jack the mic volume in game to max and I speak up. But now they can hear everything that's coming through my headset speakers and they're getting a nasty reverb. This is with the analog headset.

should be an option in control panel to give your microphone a +20db boost.

this is right on the control panel mixer just click on the lil microphone icon and check the box off.

Okay, now my voice is coming through clear.... along with all the game sounds at a ridiculously high volume. Why is the output from my headset speakers playing back through my mic? I just fired up Vent, and under the testing section I watched the mic input fluctuate right in time with the music. Loudly.

so the DB boost helped?

in the same control panel, mute your microphone. you arent actually muting the mic from picking up sound, you will stop your own voice from being heard in your headset, this can somehow also cause this feedback you speak of.

im assuming your speakers are off, you are just using the headset right?

I have checked under Master Volume, both input and output, and there is no option for mic out. I did some sample recordings in Sound Recorder, and they are very muffled and there's a ton of static. Yes the 20dB boost helps but I can barely hear myself.

edit - and yes I don't have speakers, just the headset.

dont look for a mic output. just mute the slider called mic.

your mic should still work but it will stop the mic output from working.

I muted mic volume, I got silence on the recording. I muted line volume, and I got no sound from me but a perfect recording of my game audio. I am loading the shotgun.

Also don't know if this could be affecting anything. I am trying these changes through both the Realtek HD Audio Manager and through the Windows settings. No difference.

ok your windoes sound control panel will have a sound mixer with things like WAV, Line-IN, Mic, Midi

that is where you mute mic.

you can then goto properties, recording devices, and make sure mic is checked there which means it is selected as your recording device.

hope this helps.
