Microphone not working on headsets

I use a Plantronics USB headset with microphone in World of Tanks, Windows 7 ultimate.

The mic 'just stopped working'. I can't think of any relevant changes; I did add a Kindle USB. (Removing it didn't help).

I've checked the basics and they seem ok. I thought it must just be a mad mic until I hooked up a brand new set of headsets, and they also can listen but the mic isn't working.

I found some settings in the control panel, like 'level' for recording that was set to zero, changed that and it still isn't working.

What O/S are you on?

In control panel, you should have some settings to choose which Microphone you wish to use. For example you may have an HDMI device, and one on your pc soundcard, perhaps the headset has a USB soundcard of its own.

If you only have the one and it is selected, then I would reinstall your soundcard drivers next.

What kind of sound do you have? (computer/ motherboard model would be great here) Many manufacturers have their own sound options that will override Windows settings.

Do you have more than one mic port to try?

Here's the status.

The new, second pair of headphones have a couple of adapters - one has a 3.5 out, the other has two 3.5 out.

They fit into an adapter that converts to USB. I was using the single 3.5 plug.

Turns out, the device had two 3.5 inputs - one for in, one for out, so using the 'one plug' cable was losing the 'out'.

I switched to the two-3.5 cable, and now the in and out both work ok. So now I'm back to thinking the original headset just had the mic wear out and break after a long time.

It was a coincidence that the original problem - mic not working - was the same symptom as the second situation, mic not working.

The new headphones are the $300 list price Plantronics Commander limited edition (discounted to $70 at Newegg), and a whole lot less comfortable - heavy.
