I'm already content with Win 2K unless this new OS has something really revolutionary to offer.

What seems to be interesting is the online/phone hardware specific registration.

Check this out for info.

Moz - Thanx for the link. I didn't realise that this was actually going to happen. I have to say, althought the report is inconclusive I get the idea and it really does suck bigtime. However, I have never owned a pirated copy of any operating system, I have always bought an original and no doubt Win XP will be the same, if I decide to get it that is. This HWID thing is overkill IMO. I, like most of us upgrade quite a lot so this could just cause all sorts of problems. Can you see MS support being there everytime you want to register/re-register your Product ID, I think not.

How many of you are considering WinXP. Most will keep their current OS for quite some time. Some ppl are still on Win95 so that shows you how long the likes of Win9x/ME and Win2000 will be on ppl's systems. I wouldn't be too hasty and say I was going to Linux just yet.

I'm going to wait and see once ppl start using this new improved kiddy OS, then make a judgement.

Wonder if Carmack saw this coming thats why he stuck with OpenGL as it ports to linux very easily, unlike D3D and Glide. I've spent too much money on Win32 software to change at the moment.

From what I recall, Carmack got fed up with proprietary API's after writing VQuake for Rendition cards. So he flatly refused to support any more propriety, and wrote GLQuake instead of GlideQuake. After all OpenGL *is* the only open 3D API (Glide became one too late.)

I'll be staying with my Win2K/98SE dualboot for quite a while, along with my other machine running Linux.

hrmm, I do believe Linux might BENEFIT from this release of an OS..

at least, from the people who constantly pirate Microsoft OS's, Linux will feel like heaven compared to MS's Windows XP!

when I finally think my 9x isn't going to hold it's own, I'll probably go get a copy of Windows 2K, and be on guard with the latest version of Linux in hand (downloaded of course!)..

I just looked over that Ars Technica look at this protection.. looks far too complicated for me (I upgrade at least one component every few months), I'd rather just run Linux!

There are always workaround solutions to every problem,Im sure this product activation can be bypassed.

It shouldnt be too hard to find it in the registry.

If this product activiation is implemented it is really going to stink and screw over a lot of people.

Say you go out and purchase a legitimate copy of Windows XP and register it with MS.
Then 2 months down the road your HDD fails, or you need to format and re-install.... you can't re-register the OS anymore because your only alowed to "activate" it once and it won't let you run the OS longer than 30 days without registering it.
So basically if your HDD fails or you have to format or reinstall for any reason whatsoever you have to go out and purchase a new copy of XP.

I won't loose sleep over that Rand, your *SUPPOSED* to have to call them if you need to have it reactivated, but I'm sure within 24 hrs of its release to the publishing plant (couple months before its release in stores) there will be ways around it

jpsj82, the thing with XP is that its skinnable. It takes no extra resources to have a *real* skin than it does to have that kiddy skin, so the look can change easily. I don't think being skinnable is reason enough for anyone to want to upgrade though.

I'm in the [long] process of switching my system to Linux only right now (except for a tiny 5gb partition with a stripped down copy of 98lite for gaming only). I really don't mind the way XP looks and think it might be a decent product, but with MS looking to go the way of subscription pricing and this .NET crap I'm about fed up with them. I can barely afford food and my hardware upgrades every month (so I'm a student? I'll admit until I get my degree I'm one poor b*stard), much less a bill each month for just using my computer. Linux is free, powerful, opensource, Unix (which being a Computer Science major I've become QUITE proficient with), and best of all, Linux is still "fun" to work with.

Yah, sounds like a hassle. Well won't make a decision now for sure but I might stick with my Win 2K box for a while and see how Win XP pans out. Either that or back to some form of *nix after many years .

Don't switch to Linux yet... or maybe you should, but don't Judge WinXP yet, wait till the final product is released and people actually post reviews of it, Wait till MS actually decides how product activation will work, wait till you find out that even if you could get WinXP on a subscription model it still will be available as regular boxed CD that you pay for once. Wait till you personally get your hands on it and try it.

Why should you even care? Having been using it for over a month now I can say activation does not suck, the OS is very cool and make my life easier, and its is better than Win2K.

Here is how I am currently Using WinXP
In my bedroom WinXP on mine and My Wife's Machine, she is currently playing SIMS® Livin Large.
I have my machine setup for Dual boot With Win98SE (V5 Drivers suck for XP) for games. I am connected to my laptop (Also Running WinXP) in the living room through Remote Desktop Sharing(RDS) (AKA Terminal Services)in a 1024x768x16 Window on my desktop. My laptop is currently connect to my Work Via PPTP. I have outlook running on my laptop so I can check my mail at work, I can HEAR when I get new mail on my laptop trough RDS. My laptop I currently Connected to a Win2000 Server at work (Through W2K Terminal Services) which I am administering from home. All while I post this reply, listen to MP3s (Winamp, not WMP8 I hate that Program) and talking to a friend on messenger.

This is just one reason I think WinXP will be the best OS MS has released so far. I know this scenario could probably be configured through Linux, but how long would it take you? How well would it work on your first try? If you have never done it before how many WebPages would you have to read, how many friends would you have to e-mail? How many message boards would you have to hit to get this to work in Linux? Well I got all this functionality OUT OF THE BOX, except winamp, but I guess you could use WMP8

I know I will probably get flamed a bit for this big post, but if some one was prejudging linux, maybe calling a stupid OS that nothing worked on and just looked like DOS wouldn't you want to let them know thats not what it is? Wouldn't you want tell them it is a very cool free OS that gives you all the power (Maybe a little too much) and better performance than Windows?

I didn't say WinXP sucks. I think it's going to be quite a nice OS. I've actually been a supporter of these UI changes and such. However I am fed up with MS's business practices and would rather just use Linux and avoid the hassle. I have been using it for years now (I rarely go to a message board to ask how to get anything work, as virtually everything is pretty easy to setup once you get the hang of if), so switching doesn't stress me at all. And though I don't like it, Mandrake will give you about as much functionality out of the burner as you could ever want.
