Microsoft Fires Employee For Blog Photo

Actually I agree with Microsoft here. The employee crossed the line.

BTW, it makes perfect sense that Microsoft would be using these, since they need them for stuff like Office Mac v.X and Virtual PC development, etc.

I betcha Apple would do the same if someone posted a pic of them buying Dells (for iTunes for Windows development, etc.).

Seems like some (the ones I read) of the Slashdot responses support Microsoft's firing of the guy as well.

The employee crossed the line.

What line is that? Where is there a line that says anything like "Taking a picture of a delivery truck and posting it on your website is unacceptable!"

That's retarded if they fired them over that.

I guess some nervous management types might consider this guy to be a subversive employee and a hazard to keep around.

Well, that and the fact that it's usually against company policy to do stuff like this anyway. It just makes for bad PR either way. It's bad PR if he posts the picture, and it's bad PR if he gets fired.

yea that's true. you wouldn't expect them to be so anal, but yea. i once asked a receptionist if i could take a picture because i was in the tabletpc building and she nearly had a heart attack. from his blog:

It seems that my post is seen by Microsoft Security as being a security violation. The picture itself might have been permissible, but because I also mentioned that I worked at the MSCopy print shop, and which building it was in, it pushed me over the line.

IF it makes perfect sense for MS to buy these then WHY fire the employee??

IF it makes perfect sense, then HOW did the Employee cross the line?

contradictions contradictions.

Just because it makes sense, doesn't mean they want people taking pictures on the freaking campus.

microsoft has a information release policy - you're not allowed to say what building on the campus is what and youre definitely not allowed to take pictures. Plus it does give bad PR if people dont think aobut it

Sounds like it wasn't the picture but disclosing what where he worked.

From his blog :

"It seems that my post is seen by Microsoft Security as being a security violation. The picture itself might have been permissible, but because I also mentioned that I worked at the MSCopy print shop, and which building it was in, it pushed me over the line. "

Yup.

They have their rules, and they have every right to exercise them.

Mind you it still makes for an amusing photo, regardless of everything we know. His 15 minutes of fame...

Actually, it doesn't quite make sense. Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit, if I'm not mistaken, is entirely self-contained in San Francisco. This shipment arrived in Redmond. I have a sneaking suspicion these G5s weren't being delivered for the direct purpose of developing Microsoft's Mac software. Perhaps R&D

MS can do what it wants. If they say 'no pictures allowed', then no pictures are allowed. I'm sure they have their reasons.

not at all. Most companies require permission to take pictures inside their property, let alone bring a camera in. I could get fired by bringing a camera to take pictures of my friends while having lunch in the cafeteria.

Hell, IBM used to hand out warning slips to employees without sock clips.

I think it essentially boils down to conduct unbecoming of a professional.

Hmmm... Didn't know that. R&D? Some slashdot person posted maybe it's for Longhorn R&D.

However, even if MacBU is in San Francisco, we shouldn't read too much into it.
