From the wording of the article, I'm not sure if the 3 year coverage just applies to the "three flashing red lights" error or all problems.

yeah I read it to. from 1st and 2nd read through it seems that's the case. 3 year warranty for 3 flash red lights error. Everything else its 1 year or 2 in certain regions.

Also note it says they'll reimburse you if you paid to get that error fixed. Save those repair receipts!

 Awesome. Good to see them finally own up, although I've been fortunate enough not to have any problems...yet.

Looks legit!

Too bad this was JUST after my friend's 360 went out of warranty. I already opened it up and did a bunch of stuff. I'm sure there's no way they'd take it back, as I replaced heatsink mounts and drilled out sections of the case.

Good news for most people I assume!

This is good news, but I'm a little annoyed I sprung for the extended warranty. FWIW, my 360 is about 15 months old and going strong.

that's good... but i still won't buy one until i know their failure rates are down. a long warranty doesn't help if i have to replace it every few months.

Hopefully that will be later this year when the 65nm GPU drops.

I think it's funny that M$ won't say the number except that it's "too large" and they're taking a $1B charge, but at least they're doing the right thing by extending the warranty. 3 years is really long for a piece of consumer electronics.

Heh. Got to love accounting tricks. MS is putting the $1B bill on 2007's fiscal sheet. They are still predicting profitability for 2008 because of it.

Link
LOS ANGELES, July 5 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said it still expects its Xbox video game division to make a profit in fiscal 2008 after announcing a fiscal 2007 charge of more than $1 billion to cover repairs to Xbox 360 consoles.

"Our goal has been to have Xbox profitable in the coming fiscal year 2008," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices unit. "We don't think this changes that in any way."

This makes a price cut soon after/at the same time as the PS3 price cut all the more likely.

The charges occurred in 2007. If, after making changes to the hardware, they continue to see repair problems in 2008 they'll put a new charge in at that time.

I'm not getting your point I think.

Some have said that since MS is going to take a $1B charge on the warranty extension that they won't do a price drop. Since they put the $1B charge on the 2007 fiscal year it won't affect anything they do for the 2008 fiscal year....like a price drop.

All this bad publicity and now an expensive warranty extension and all they had to do (and what they still need to do) is replace the X clamps holding the heat sinks in place. Why the fvck they didn't do it when they were designing the Elite is beyond comprehension. Instead, they just slapped some extra epoxy on the board to try and keep it from warping.

$1B for M$ is just a drop of water in the ocean. Its good they extended the warranty but they should have done this a long time ago when the problems were first becoming an issue. Now those who have already did their own repairs are assout.

I wouldn't say that 1 billion is a small amount for MS to pay, but it is still easily doable for them. Remember the rumors that MS was going to pay 50 billion for Yahoo a few months ago.

Well, 1b upfront to curb the issue is cheaper than millions suing for crappy-made consoles. A great many lawsuits were about to really slam MS and even if they would win most of the suits it would cost more than 1B in lawyer fees and such. Still, at least they are attempting to do the right thing.

This is awesome. My 360 suffered from this problem a few months ago (It was a launch console) and I had to pay to get it repaired.

Looks like I will be getting a check in 10-12 weeks!

and step-up too. Now, when I sell my current one for the 65nm, the next person gets RRoD warranty coverage <Martha Stewart>and that's a good thing</>
