I would also suggest buying anything you think you might need right before you retire.

I think MS is pushing the HUP program onto 365 so it will be an annual subscription instead of a one time purchase. They haven’t nuked my stand alone Office install yet but I think that it’s a matter of time since my employer moved to 365 about a year ago. I don’t know if I’ll be asked to verify my continued employment or not.

I am on 365 through my employer and I was asked here at home to verify. I put in my personal email and it worked. When I go to accounts.microsoft, I have no subscriptions. I think I've used every version of HUP since 2000 or so.

Did I lose my HUP rights when I retired?

Your license purchased through HUP terminates when 1) your sponsor company terminates its software assurance or 2) you are no longer an employee of the sponsor company.

With that said, I don't think Microsoft is strictly enforcing it but you'll have to put on an eye patch to continue using your licenses acquired through HUP.

Workplace had Microsoft Office Professional Plus for purchase, early 2013 and paid $9.95+tax.

Ahhh the good ol' software as a service scam that we all know and love now.

Because, you know... There have been these vast changes in how we use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel since 2006 or whatever.

It's the reason I went to Libre office. Never missed MS, never had a hiccup along the way, never going back to M$.

Can you open MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint in Libre?
Word and excel for sure, never used the presentation tools so I don't know.
Why do you need power point? Are you explaining why they changed brands of apple juice at the old folks home?

Yes. Quality will depend on how complicated the source documents are, and I don't think macros are supported(libreoffice uses python for programming I believe). For my simple needs, in an engineering office, everything works.

I have all my old training files in case I get bored in retirement and want to teach emergency management again.

I am also looking to set up my granddaughter (10) for school and a computer we have for her birthday.

Well, if you need any help, let me know. Just messin' with ya earlier about losing your mind. I didn't remember what HUP meant. (*Guess I was losing my mind.)

Everybody messes with everybody, it's all good.
I have the PC, just working out the Office software end. She may not need it now but I do. Will test drive Libre.

You get more than just Word and Excel with 0365. Permanent licenses are still available if you really need Word/Excel and don't care about the extra features the subscription gets you. Most people would be fine with the free alternatives.

Not with HUP, not anymore.
In 2014 I bought Office Pro 2013 for CDN $12, it came with 2 licenses, I used for my desktop PC and laptop.
I'm planning to buy a new PC within a year or two, and it's only O365 now, where according to website, it's 30% off. Even personal edition is $56/year, vs $12 that has served me well for 6+ years. "A good deal it no longer is".
I will probably go libre office too, I used it before, and fall back to web version via work account / remote desktop to work PC if I need something libre can't handle. TBH, even buying regular Office Home 2019 ($130) is better than HUP O365, as long as I keep it for >2 years, and I don't update PC that often. I just need Word, Excel, PPT, don't care about cloud and other stuff.

that is what I was referring to.

I just use my work login to install Office on my home PC. My company has O365 E5 which allows install on 5 devices. When I leave my job I won't have access to it anymore, but don't really care, would just use an online office (office online or google docs).
