Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer goes to sleep

I have a problem with my Intellimouse Explorer. If I don't use it for a while it seems to go into a sleep mode or something. I have to move it around and after about 3 seconds it works normally again. It might not seem like a big problem but in 3D shooters it's often the difference between life and death
I'm running Win98 SE and I have the IntelliPoint v3.2 Driver loaded.
Any suggestions aside from changing the mouse?

Alex, do you have a lot of USB peripherals installed? I own a couple Explorers and they've never done what you're experiencing. What motherboard are you using? Sometimes it's the USB drivers for the motherboard that cause problems with USB peripherals.

What other USB items are plugged in? Do you own an Iwill?

I have an MSI "BX Master" motherboard and I've loaded the latest Intel chipset drivers. The only other USB devices I have plugged in are a cradle for my HP Jornada 720 and a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro (Although I believe the keyboard USB is just for the USB hub in the keyboard to operate, the keyboard itself uses a PS/2 connector)

You should call M$. There are defective wires on the older models. May not be the problem, but it could be. Either way, M$ is excellent about sending replacements out.

I had the same problem with an Intellimouse w/Intellieye. I think it's probably defective, but MS will replace it for free.

You didn't say whether you've got the mouse plugged into the USB port or PS/2. I intially had my old mouse plugged into the PS/2 port, I then got the Intellieye and left it on the PS/2 but the power would never go off. So I went and plugged the mouse into the USB port, Win98, W2K all recognized the mouse and installed it. The power now went off with the computer power, but I ended up with the delay as you've noticed.

I returned to PS/2 and it's working fine again. I suppose if I re-install my OS's with it plugged into the USB port, it might work..or perhaps not..I'm not going to try it out..

If indeed MS will replace the mouse, might as well try that route..Regards

I have the mouse plugged into the USB port. I think I've got the USB to PS/2 converter that came with the mouse lying around somewhere. I've always had the mouse plugged into USB though.

So you installed the OS with the mouse plugged into the USB port?? Hmm..so much for my theory.. But if you can find that USB->PS/2 converter, then plug the mouse into the PS/2 port and see what happens, more often than not, the sleepiness should go away, if it persists, then you indeed do have bad hardware and should get it replaced..Regards
