Thats another myth. The slow update problem can't be swept under a rug since its quite widespread. Theres nothing wrong with the pc's that I maintain in my family and the update process still hangs and fails which could take over an hour without completing a single update.

The recent 1511 update could be in part meant to help resolve this slow update issue and bloated disk space requirement by keeping Win10 installations fresh with regular large 1511 type updates by clearing out the update history, and not let piles of updates with complex interdepencies clog up the update process.

How is it a "myth?" I've used windows update on hundreds of fresh installed Windows 7 machines, the last one I did this on was *yesterday*. Checked and found the updates within a reasonable timeframe.

Nobody is saying that Windows Update works perfectly 100% of the time, but there are literally *thousands* of reasons why Windows Update might hang on any given system. It can't all be lumped together as one problem because it's simply not, and it definitely isn't some grand conspiracy by Microsoft to get people to upgrade.

I think some people(not saying you) are reading too much into conspiracy theory when they have to wait for Windows update, I had a slow Windows update for Win10 a few weeks ago, end of the day too many variables like traffic, what it is actually downloading, speed of your internet and spec of PC etc ...

As I stated earlier this is the OS forum and they love to dramatise a lot of things here, most of it is unwarranted.

As to failed Windows updates well I've had that happen on XP, Vista,Win7,Win8 and 10 so nothing new there, simple fix for that is normally try later or manual download direct from Microsoft's website if you know the KB update number.

Win10 is NSA's wet dream. Its 1984 on steroids. Its Hitlers hard on.

Apps spy on you, cortana spies on you, even basic search spies on you, telemetry spies on you, they log your key strokes, automated updates that can't be stopped, searching and analyzing your hard drive for "pirated" software, directed ads on all the programs you are using, geo data, personal data, business data, etc... its all collected and sent to microsoft.
Haha you may be right.

Why Microsoft Says Windows 10 Upgrades Cannot Be Stopped

Then this:

and

If you are using the GWX control panel, you have to update it to the latest one due to the updates that rolled out in Nov/Dec.

Wonder how long this crap will continue? I've turned off all updates on all my machines. Wonder if they will find a way to force it regardless of your settings.

Just wow. Even Apple doesn't nag me about updates so hard! No wonder, some people are beginning to hate Windows 10 / Microsoft.

Windows is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. The more they push, the more I will resist. I was ready to give in and get 10 in 2020 when 7 expires, but this constant nagging is pissing me off. One of the main reasons I use Windows is for games. I can easily use a version of Linux like Mint or Zorn. I currently have both on a VM to play around with.

I've experienced said issue over and over with my laptop that I had backup image of Windows 7.
It was current as of end of July. I couldn't get updates to work for weeks...
You'd think it is not big deal. It is because it locks an CPU and on dual core laptop it is huge deal.

I've tried even clean install; no luck.

There is definitely an issue out there. It seems to affects systems with limited RAM.

That wont matter, even in Linux you will get the Win10 update notification, it cant be stopped!

You can't file a class action lawsuit because your computer is jacked up.

If you have a slightly out of date PC taking *hours* for Windows Update to list the updates, there's something wrong with your PC.
No, there's nothing wrong with the PC. It was fresh installed off a SP1-U disc, updated, and then mothballed. It wasn't used, there is no malware on it.

It was then dusted off some months later and attempted to update. Takes HOURS for the update list to appear.

It's clearly a problem with Windows Update, not with the PC.

I do at least one of these a week, Windows 7 Professional, based off an old image that just barely has SP1 on it, so there's a good 250+ updates it needs. The list shows up in maybe 5 minutes tops every time I do it.
And let me guess, that system is likely an i5-2400 or better, right? Try on a more pedestrian CPU, like a C2D with 2GB RAM.

LoL Executioner! Your update choices are now, or before you go to bed :^D

Sometimes free(gratis) isn't the best deal. Once you're tied up in gratis services, it's harder to switch in the future. They already took away "unlimited" OneDrive. Get everyone hooked on their heroin, and start raising the prices. They have enough expensive analyists to determine the breaking point before people jump ship.

Re: high kernel times, how high up the chart is system interrupts on task manager?

MS upped the nagging because there's still alot of Win 7/8 users, kind of a stunning thing since upgrading to 10 is free.

Or its a problem with your network, or your ISP, or yes it's the PC, or any other thousand possible issues. It's not a conspiracy, really.

It was an old Dell Optiplex 380, actually. C2D with 3GB ram. It's right about 7 years old now.

Geez, put some RAM in the darn thing already. You're complaining about Windows not running well on near bare minimum specs. Well duh it isn't going to necessarily run well! Even 1 GB more would make a huge difference. My parents have a C2D with 3GB RAM and it has no issues at all FYI.

Right, let's say it is a laptop that takes 2GB RAM max. What then? Throw it in trash? Just because MS can't be bothered to have update app reasonable?

Even today 2-in-1 are being sold with that much RAM. And it is perfectly fine for email+web use.

I was having this issue on my sisters laptop after I replaced her bad HDD. I went to update windows and it was maxing out the cpu at 100%. I finally shut it off after a few hours of "looking for updates".

Back in 2009 (when 7 came out), it was VERY rare to see a computer with less than 4 GB of RAM. If you are using a computer that maxes at 2 GB, I would recommend asking Santa for something new, because I don't see running Windows 7(and being at all happy with it) in the cards for that one.

What laptop built in the last 6 years maxes out at 2GB? Seriously? If you mention those horrid 1st gen atom netbooks, well, those were junk when new!

I'm not denying that Windows Update can sometimes be a bit of a memory hog and a pain when way behind on updates. But when running bare minimums sometimes you just have to be a bit more patient. It will (eventually) figure itself out. I've found it helps once it has a list of updates to just tell it to install the first dozen or so, reboot, and do another couple dozen. The .NET ones are the some of the worst ones to deal with on a slow system.

Besides, it still goes back to an age-old issue with Windows Update. It is nothing new, MS isn't sabotaging anything.

Now they ruined Windows Live Mail! Claim it needs a patch to continue running but eventually says you will have to go to 8 or 10 to use that mail client. F them.

HP Stream - 2GB and 32GB storage, AFAIK neither is upgradeable. Never mind 6 years ago, it's being sold right now with Win 10 in Best Buy. I'm sure there are more examples.

Yeah, there's a LOT of tablets, 2-in-1s, and lower-end laptops, all with primarily Atom CPUs, all CURRENT SKUs, with only 2GB of non-upgradable RAM.

Can you remind me what exactly happened to WLM in Windows 7?

It just occured to me that if MS really is sabotaging Win 7 in order to force or encourage users to upgrade, it just reminds me of Electronic Arts marketing method with forced marketing.

PS- business laptops are still shipping with Windows 7 pro, hmm wonder why...

Because business are slow to upgrade and you are looking at old laptops (New Dell XPS ship with Win10 and some Latitude models do also).

OEMs selling junk systems has nothing to do with Windows Update. If you don't want a PC that runs like it's hip deep in a lake full of molasses, don't buy some $200 junk PC. That's not Microsoft's fault.

Also how many of those have Windows 7 installed on them?
None.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 were specifically designed to require less disk space and run better on lower-end hardware. All of those devices you listed ship with either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
