Microsoft is committing suicide with Windows 8

Is Microsoft trolling us with Windows 8? Is Microsoft throwing the game? Is Windows 8 one big joke? Is Microsoft trying to commit suicide?

I tested Windows 8 Release Preview today and it only left me with bad impression, is Microsoft seriously going to force us to use Metro on desktop computers?

Metro makes Windows 8 feel like a version of Windows you would design for the mentally challenged to use, not only it's bad it is also not nice to look at, it looks like a mess, too much of the screen is wasted on large fonts and ugly squares.

Using Windows 8 makes you not want to use the computer, instead of stunning you with amazing visuals and smart menu's it makes you want to shut down the computer.

Microsoft is doing a mistake of pushing the metro design instead of the classic desktop, the Windows desktop is a sacred foundation that should not be removed, it is what made Windows successful and it should only be improved, not replaced, if they want to try this metro UI they should sell it as a stand alone prodcut. read more

It's not clear to me how those of us with large desktop monitors are going to be able to use the touchscreen interface: my monitor is not within arm's reach while I'm seated at my desk. For this reason I think MS will have no choice but to enable mouse/kb navigation of the Win8 desktop. You're right, though. It looks like crap.

So let me get this straight. You didn't like how windows 8 user interface feels, it left a bad impression for you, so you decided that it's a bad product, somehow?
Any real flaws?
If you don't like Metro - don't use it. I don't.

No they are not trolling with you, they see the future and want their products to adapt.

Nobody is forcing you to do anything, but if you want to use Windows 8 you will have to see the Metro UI once in a while.

This is the type of thinking that dooms companies.

Remember everyone, when you see a product in the free market that SUCKS ASS, you must cave in to the apologists. You're just imagining how much you notice that it sucks. Multi-billion dollar corporations get your automatic support just for existing. Whatever they say goes. Dumb visions of 'the future' always pan out- like the way you're dressed like Buck Rodgers right now, about to step into your banana yellow rocket-car.

So ignore the fact that you think it's crap, and most sane people you know above the mental age of 12 think it's crap also. Worry about what MS-shills think is 'the future' instead.

Oh yeah, and buy up more shares of Apple while you can.

My desktop computer can kick the snot out of any iPad or Android. It can do so much more than these devices it isn't even funny.

Obviously, there is a choice. You can either use the Metro mode or Desktop mode in 8.

Furthermore, there will be utilities that will add the Start Menu in desktop mode. There will be also be ways to automatically select the desktop mode. If you install Classic Shell for instance, it will automatically boot to desktop mode and give you a hybird XP-7 Start Menu.

If you are only desktop apps, staying in desktop mode might be better if do not like change. Use the Metro mode when you want to use Metro apps.

I think the idea with Windows 8 is that many businesses and government agencies are sticking with Windows 7 or just moved to 7 this year so Microsoft is tailoring 8 mainly for tablets and as a transition to Windows 9 when they'll more smoothly have all the form factors (desktops, laptops, tablets, and possibly phone) run one unified OS. My own workplace only moved off XP onto 7 this year and its a solid enough OS that I can't really justify moving onto 8 for my own home Windows 7 system unless the cost was super cheap and most home users are probably like me. At least this is what I think their strategy is. What they should have done is maybe market 8 as a tablet OS that can also run in desktop mode while saying they mean for 7 to still be the main desktop OS and do a "leak" where they say that Windows 9 will combine the best features of both and more so that it can run on any form.

Metro was designed to be used with touch screens.

If one puts the Metro issue aside, stop the "Cry baby" behavior and really evaluate Win 8 desktop capacity, One might find out that Win 8 Desktop per-se is a better upgrade from Win 7, than Win 7 was from Vista.

So, the choices are two.

1. Shoot yourself in the foot, and save $40.

2. Upgrade for $40 and "stomach" the ""Terrible Horrible"" need to click twice in order to get to the desktop.

I haven't installed my Preview of Win 8 yet been busy with Linux Mint 13 lately. Otherwise from what I can tell from the reviews of 8, I bought a new laptop last month to insure I got win7 + it was a great special price. Otherwise looking at getting family pack to upgrade my win xp comps to win7. Might buy an extra oem Win7 just to be on the safe side

Microsoft and the rest of the industry wants to kill desktop computers and wants tablets to replace them. I find this is BS, but it looks like that's the way things are heading.

What amazes me with MS is how little they care about what their customer's think. They have such a grapple on the industry that they pretty much can force whatever they want and still make money. They know people hate win8 but they have not even considered listening to people and they'll release it as is anyway. Just like they did with Vista.

I was going to write a lot about it but I'm just going to say; Windows 8 is pure shit.

Bring back the start menu or I'll never upgrade beyond 7.

I've been a die hard MS fan since day 1 too. I even liked Vista and ME.

Why would you want to use a real computer in the age of the tablet anyway?
because not all computer users use it for facebooking and g-mailing.

some use to: programming / excel / word-processor/ graphics / video editing / .... those are not nice to do on tablets.

This. Sadly 99% of users are "Facebookers" so seems like the few of us that still want a desktop computer are getting screwed by the industry's movement to handheld devices.

I think handheld devices have their place, but they should not be treated as a replacement for a PC.

There is no way anyone is goign to be "forced" into using metro. It's microsoft. There will be half a dozen ways to hack it so that there is no sign of metro.

Sure they are, and doing them all by jabbing the display with your finger is the future.

I vote with my money, not even $5.00 for W8 would make me buy it personally and MS can go in any way they want since it's their company to do with it what they want and most people just use the internet anyway.

What I really hate is your black background with white fonts on your blog, now that really irritates me.....

I've been a loyal user to MS since Dos/windows 3, then 95, 98, 98se, me, 2000, xp, 2003, vista, 2008r2, 7.

I even liked "ME" (except for the usual crashes),
and got the vista ultimate retail box.

Windows 8 is 1st first windows that i be having problem with.

It is not going to be a surprise to see something more successful to the whole Microsoft operating system, just like Firefox to Internet Explorer 7 years ago.

If linux was able to get some major pc software companies doing applications for it, then that is it for windows.

1) There must be some feature in Windows 8 you must want to use, otherwise you would just stick to Windows 7 and there would be no point in complaining.
2) I'm sure there will be plenty of tools/utilities for you to automatically skip to the desktop in Windows 8.
3) Is it really that hard to press WinKey+D when your computer boots up to skip to the desktop?

Part of me just shakes my head sometimes. Don't like it, don't use it!

^ That's exactly what people are saying: they don't like it, so they're not going to use it. Too complicated?

I personally don't find it all that compelling to pay $40 just to put a layer of crap over my desktop that I have to skip past in order to have a semblance of what I already have. I could do that for free right now by allowing some annoying spyware to run wild all over my system.

There are few things I like in the sane part of 8 vs.7, but nothing that's a must-have, so until there's a permanent fix for the 'Metro virus' I'll be passing.
