What shall they call the new interface now? I vote for Dull and Uninspiring, which is precisely what it will look like on a 24" 1080p monitor.

That is one step in the right direction,
First kill the name,
Then kill the object itself.

One step at a time.

how about metro-sexual? isn't that a term?

ahh... too bad for billy gates, R.I.P. Micro$oft. 1975-2013

In the meantime, we have ubuntu and OSX

unless this is Micro$oft's strategy to let people stop making viruses for the system!
(since the market share will be so small...)

Microsoft needs to get burned by their own mistake before they truly learn.

How a massive multi-national 1+ billlion user company go on with such a mistake for so long. If Metro Germany had such an issue they would of brought it up when Windows Phone came out.

Why would that need to change?
Frankly, it has always been a sign of an idiot poster (or a 13 year old). It's perfectly possible - and even encouraged - to have a rational discussion about Microsoft without using "M$" or such.

Fascinating, I never knew a simple dollar sign could have such an effect on a conversation.

Well it's like any other slur, e.g. Crapple, Fandroid, etc. It doesn't add anything meaningful to the conversation, and while it doesn't directly obscure the meaning of an argument it typically indicates that the speaker has no intent of holding a reasonable discussion. In other words, it's a red flag that the speaker should be ignored.

A thoughtful word choice has always been the hallmark of polite conversation, so this is nothing new.

Agreed, though I will admit to having a "crapple" folder on my iphone, full of the stock apps I cannot delete (but want to) :sneaky:

Installed the leaked RTM (enterprise N huild 9200).

They are killing of the desktop.

I couldn't find the good old windows classic games, .. need to login to online account and download some big stuff, just to be a be able to play solitaire or minesweeper on full screen, YAY!

Clicking on the network icon in the taskbar in the right bottom corner brings a metro style thing with limited functionality.

want to restart, go to one of the left corners, wait a second, click settings, click power , click restart.

Is it possible that we are just really slow to adapt to the 'new' touch pad tablets world .... where everyone move their hand across the screen to tap on big buttons ....

Is it already the time to be killing the desktop ?-

Not to nit pick but there is no need for the "wait a second" step when you're talking about restarting. Mouse over the top right or bottom right corner and immediately move the mouse to the center of the screen and the menu pops up.

Windows 8 isn't "suicide" by any means.

The UI is dramatically different from any iteration of Windows since Windows 95. The OS itself, however, is still as fully-featured as ever.

Any developers complaining about Windows 8 are out of their minds. Windows 8 supports all of the APIs that Windows 7/Vista supported; some of them may even be enhanced. Developers should actually enjoy the fact that compatibility with Windows 8 should be relatively effortless.

I can't honestly say that the start screen is a very big deal to the average user, either. Most people use a media player, web browser, messaging client, and possibly office software. They have a shortcut to said application on the desktop, taskbar, and start menu; does it really matter that the start menu has been redesigned in a way that some people dislike? It was usually faster to access programs from the taskbar.

Charms would be more useful if it had more options in it. For me, the settings option was the only useful one. However i find both start search and advanced search to be pretty bad. For one i noticed it still will not find certain files, even if i know exactly where they are and its slow, doesnt matter if anything is indexed or not. indexing helps to a degree, but they say you can make it slower if you index too much...which is retarded imo. Searching for files is something Linux has done better since i first tried it back in 2007.

fully featured is not the issue, everyone knows its fully featured as far as a Wndows OS goes, Its the user interaction to those features is the issue.
And the average user nowadays does not use a desktop at home much anymore. Desktop sales are in hard decline. Tablets and laptops dominate the average user market atm.

but what about us, the ol' faithful's? Microsoft seems to forget about us. Is it about time for us to move towards the fruit company?

you could use Linux and have it however you want. Though i suppose the "old faithfuls" is either too few or not the future of computing.

Ubuntu (gnome) have made the same mistake a couple of years ago with "unity", ignored what is useful for desktops, resulted in many users ditching for an alternative "Linux mint", and many people installing their custom desktop manager,

Due to this, ubuntu lost the lead to Mint in the linux family, (Mint is based on ubuntu but with a different desktop manager)

MS is sacrificing desktop users, can windows 8 be a good enough in tables, to compete with android and ios ?

Is windows now only aimed at non- power users ?
So power users would install their linux and have an old windows in vmware-player ?

(vmware player is free and runs great on linux, faster than the free vbox)

Why MS is combining tablet and desktop OS in one ? , why not create separate OS for each device, like they do with window editions.

Why not create some sort of 'modes' to run in, just like windows server have gui and simple (core) modes.

What are they trying to do

Is it possible they see too much of a future for tablets, and want to take advantage of having already a large user base in desktops, so that when those desktop users begin to go tables, they would pick the OS that they are comfortable with, in this case would be Windows.

Have you not seen how OS X has more and more features infused in it from iOS? You are simply delaying the inevitable at that point. Just take a look at calendar and address book in OS X Lion and Mountain Lion. To me, I find that stuff FAR more egregious than Metro because there is absolutely no utility in faux leather or making a desktop app look like a real address book (which most people under 30 have never seen before in real life!).

Power users can freely switch to linux, but average people won't. I just don't see Best Buy ever bothering to stock a Linux machine in their stores, they tried that already when netbooks first came out and it failed spectacularly.
