Microsoft just scared me...

I was signing up to download the Windows 2008 Server Beta and I didn't even use my real name or address or anything and when I finished and reached the end page where it shows my info, it was switched to my address that I had two addresses ago and it even had the name of the business where I work. I totally cant figure out how MS would get that info.... For one, I live in the neighboring city that it stated. Two, I use a student distro of XP so there is never any personal info on my system and i never have to register. Three, I never had internet at that address they listed. Four, I've for sure NEVER sent any info to MS about where I work (and almost never send MS any info ever).

It can't be my isp because I use internet on an account owned by the people who own the house that I'm living in....

The only thing I can reason is that they somehow linked my mac address of my on board nic to something else.. what I dont know!

But so much for privacy I guess... I cant figure this out!

MAYBE my address that I had one time.... OHHH!! I just rememebered! OKay, theree was a post on atot a LOOONG time ago about getting a free pen drive from Microsoft if you answer like 5 tech questions right, so I did that! Thats how they got it! I answered those questions correctly but I never did receive that damn pen drive...

I'm pretty sure that I never told them where I work though...

Even though this makes sense now, it doesnt seem right because what if I sold my motherboard to someone else on ebay or something and then they were using it... grrr dumb old controlling ms

I recently got a similar scare from IBM.... I worked there for a few months 4 years back... I recently got a letter from them that a laptop containing my personal information was lost.... This is my 5th residence in 4 years and I never updated my address with them... How in the world did they find out my current address

Well did you know about that email-tracking software they implemented through emails ? They will pay each and every one of us just for being listed in the forward.

If they have the ability to do that, then they can certainly do this. Come on now!
