ressurecting the old thread because I have a mouse that died and had to dig it up. Though it might be helpful to anyone new around here. QUOTED from Wino:

The Skinny: Replace your Microsoft mouse (intellimouse, wireless, usb, ps2, whatever) for FREE.

*** YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUPPLY YOUR SALES RECEIPT, RETURN YOUR OLD MOUSE, OR PAY ANY SHIPPING CHARGES. ***

Note: Refer to the warranty or call the toll free number if you have any questions about Microsoft's policy. Below I'll outline the information given to me over the phone by a Microsoft Supplemental Parts rep.

If you call Microsoft Supplemental Parts (800-360-7561 toll free USA & Canada) they will give you a fax (716-447-7330). All you have to do is fax them the following:

1) To: Microsoft Supplemental Parts (<- rep said this was important)
2) your first & last name
3) address
4) telephone number
5) email address
6) photocopy of the bottom of your mouse, with a setting clear and light enough to show the Product ID information on the mouse.

Two days ago I sent them faxes for 2 of my mice (personal, not business). I received the following today:

If I knew it was this easy earlier, I wouldn't have lived for so long with an annoying double click problem in my mouse which I noticed a few months ago during a rather... emotional Urban Terror q3 mod game. =)

UPDATE:

=========

It turns out that each different type and model of M$ hardware product has
a specific warranty duration, so you need to keep this in mind when you
call. This table shows the various products and warranty durations:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q173715

The rodents themselves, in addition to the PN, also have a manufacturing
date code on the bottom label. It will be a 4 digit #, often in different
looking print, like 0299 or 4101. The last two digits are the year and
the first two are the week, so 41st week of 2001 for the latter date code.
If they ask you the date you put the rodent into service, it needs to be
within the warranty for that product, and not TOO far after the manufacture
date.

Or, like Ricky Ricardo used to say, "Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to
do!"

Thanks for reposting this! I had forgotten all about it. I have two mice to replace. One is a real thick Intellimouse they haven't made in over a year. It is just worn out. I wonder if they don't have it, if they replace it with a similar, newer one I guess I will find out.

I just did this yesterday. The CSR told me the same thing except they didn't mention "To: Microsoft Supplemental Parts". Hope mine comes through.

I sent in my girlfriend's faulty "blue" optical mouse...

I get one of the brand new Wireless Opticals in return. Definitely a Hot Deal!

I'm pretty sure they do. The first time i did this, i had an intellimouse v1.0 that wasn't working, and they sent me a 3.0 as a replacement.

I did this once a year or two ago when an Intellimouse Optical of mine went bad but received a mail reply back saying my serial number wasn't covered by their replacement policy.

Call them and I bet they send you a new one!

Despite all the negative stuff guys like to say about Microsoft, their customer support for hardware products is awesome. I got one of their original Explorer mice as a gift for Christmas a few years ago and I have had issues with it breaking and they have replaced it with a new mouse every time for free with no effort besides the phonecall on my part. The latest Explorer 3.0 they sent me has worked like a charm for several months and should it break you know I will be calling Microsoft again.

Wonder why they shafted me then. All they offered for a reply was to say my serial number didn't qualify.

Atleast they got my money again cause I like their Intellimouse Optical so just bought another one.

Yep, my bro picked up a MS optical mouse for $9.99 at Microcenter. How you gonna beat ten bucks for such a good mouse? I still cringe when I look at my old MS Intellimouse mechanical mouse that I bought for $60. It still works great but that price is probably why they make a billion dollars profit per quarter.

just a thought, since the optical mouse box is transparent top and bottom, can't you buy the mouse new, photocopy the serial number at the back of the mouse while it is still in the box, fax the photocopy and then return the mouse to the store?

How would they tell?

Just a thought...

Yes. Microsoft replaced my Natural Elite Keyboard about a year ago.

I'm not going to totally freak on you like alot of people would, but ill tell you why this is a bad idea:

You are not just ripping off MS, but you are ripping off the person who buys the mouse you return. Down the road when they try to get warranty service they are not goign to get it because they serial number has been stolen.
