I still use Office XP Pro 2002 .. works well. I have a copy of Office XP Pro 2007 from
the ms events this year, but, it does need more memory than my rig has currently.
So, for now I won't install it. That said, it does offer the newer xml mode for document
interchangeability, but you can also save in the old office fornats. As to the size of spreadsheets,
as it, in my view, they are too large to begin with. And I don't know any way in Excel to set a
sheet to only a range of cells. For ex, at work, I only need sheets that go to column Z or maybe AZ
but there is not easy way to limit it. Same for number of rows ... Who needs 1 M rows in a sheet ? ?
There is also no way to just get to the end of the Columns or the Last Row (that I know of)

I have Office 07 and I didn't like it cuz it is so confusing for me since I have used Office 2003 which is easier to use. I have to re-learn it over again on Office 2007.
I also have OpenOffice on my laptop as well as Corel WordPerfect 12 (not install yet).

Outlook 2007 got me hooked to Office 2007. I love the features but my laptop is slow. I wonder if I should upgrade my 512 megs of ram.

Hehe, I still use office 98...

All I ever need it for is MicrosoftWord, and as long as it can let me type Times New Roman with 1" margins it's good enough for what I need.

josh6079,

What operating system do you run that Office 98 on?

In case you run on WIndows XP, HOW did you get that to work on XP?

I ran Office 97 uptil about a year ago on XP, and I didn't have to do anything special for it. Just run setup and install.

Well now that's quite an improvement. Thanks! Going to have to hit up the boss for a copy then.

2007 is really good...the changes (aka, the ribbon menu) are for the better, quite honestly. i cant use 2003 and below anymore since 2007 has all the tools i use readily available on the ribbon.

i say go for 2007.

I've decided to go with OO for my new rig. I still have MS Office S&T 2003 or so on my laptop, but I decided I didn't want to pay $100 when I use at most 5% of what the tools offer.

Open Office does that 5% and more.

I don't suppose that they sell Excel 2007 as a stand alone would they, without having to purchase the whole Suite?

For that price $229 ... I would just add the extra cost and get the whole thing.
It is cheaper in the long run and sooner or later, you will find yourself wanting
to use one or more of the other programs included with the full version.

2k7 is great. You WILL get used to the interface. It's not such a bad learning curve.

I need it for work. I'm going to love having over a million rows to work with. The upgrade version is only $109.00 which is not too bad. Thanks Schadenfroh, just what I was looking for.

I assume you are brining this from the office back to your house to work? Is your employer a member of the Microsoft Work At Home program? If so, you could get office pro for about $30 (my father was able via his place of employment, hell of a deal).

I'll have to check this out, sounds like a great deal. And yes this is for the work I do at home for the company.

i tried 2007 for a bit but uninstalled for ONE reason: word 2007 doesn't offer an option for blue background and white text! (has anyone been able to find a "fix" for this?) i don't understand why they removed this feature; it one thing for it not to be a default setting but why remove it entirely?

outlook 2007 was nice too, probably because it didnt have an interface change and was basically a more polished version of outlook 03. i'm sure i could get over the learning curve for the other apps, but i already know how to do what i need to do. and that missing word option turned me off. remember, you can download an addon for previous office releases that will allow you to open the new office 2007 formatted files.

too bad Rutgers doesn't have an office 2007 suite or I woulda picked it up. Sucks how it offers only the part of Office that I absolutely do not want. Schandenfroh, does MSDNAA office an office 2007 suite for your school? Or for anyone's for that matter? I just want office standard which is <$70 through onthehub but I don't belong to any of the universities registered to it.

BTW heres a M$ site that tells students how to save $$ on their softare.

I am considering an upgrade from 2000 to 2003. So I ran both on my V-machine before changing. I threw in my toughest spreadsheet to torture test and did a sort on data feeding a pageful of sumif's. Result on the first round was 2000 29 seconds, 2003 1 minute 30 seconds. I didn't believe so I did some research to find 2003 does a recalc on open. Made the suggested tweak and second test 2003 19 seconds. Pretty conclusive. I haven't gotten a copy of 2007 yet but good sources tell me its loaded with features but slow as hell. Answer go 2003 but make sure you tweak the options or you will be going backwards.

You should at least try a demo of Office 2007 before you decide. Personally, I'm sticking with OpenOffice at home and Office 2003 at work. I tried out 2007, but I think the toolbar ("ribbon") is ridiculous. It takes up to much space (though I do seem to remember there was supposed to be some way of hiding it). I don't know, I usually think change is good, if it improves things. But I think the new look is just for the sake of saying "ooh, look; this isn't just another Office rehash."

It was several months ago, though, so I can't remember the details, but I remember I had no interest in upgrading. And everyone's preferences are different. I like to maximize the space of the working area, but maybe other people like having every single feature and button crammed out in the open at the top of the window. You can try OpenOffice for free, and you can try the Office 2007 demo for free, so what do you have to lose?

Heavy discount on the core office package (Excel, word, powerpoint), but everything else is free (like Access 2007, Visio, publisher, infopath, onenote, SharePoint Desigener, etc.) at my university. Plus various operating systems are free and the full version of Visual Studio 2005 is like $25 shipped (no download on that one).

Since you have to work with such a very large number of records, you really might be better off using a relational database instead of a spreadsheet.

A rdms is more suited to manipulating such a lot of records. That's the job they're made for.

It could involve a learning curve if you're not acquainted with them, but in the long run you might find that it works better for handling a million records.

Some are: MySQL, Access, Postgre, lots of others to chose from.
