Wow! Don't smash it! Call Microsoft, they will send you a NEW one for free and you can keep your old one. I did this and I took the old mouse, cut 8-12 inches off the thing, take apart mouse, unplug the cord from inside, cut some off, solder the plug back on, viola, mouse works. They used some cheap wire in the cord that tends to break where it enters the mouse.
Anyway, give them a call and you'll get the same mouse or a better one!
