Microsoft overstepping their boundaries

THIS crap has got to stop.

So I've since turned off all updates, and will do them as I see fit. I don't mind if it wants to manage it for me in the background at 3am when I'm not using it, but if part of "managing it" involves trying to pull crap like this I won't allow it. I used to just be able to grab the "reboot now, reboot later" window and hide it under my taskbar if I was busy.

I'm about to call up MS and scream at somebody. Several people actually. First time Vista did this to me it was crunch time and I was in the middle of a big project for school. I had hidden the "reboot in x hours" window under my taskbar and then it morphed into the "rebooting in 5 minutes" window and I hadn't seen it. It started closing all my programs and it tried to kill Multisim and my project/circuit design but luckily I was able to hit save in time. I can't believe they'd pull something like this.

I agree, shit like that pisses me off to no end.

I can't remember how, but I turned that shit off.

God, I hate Vista.

Yes I get very annoyed when it does that force reboot crap. I've never seen it in Vista though.

This. Vista has a window that lets you select how long until you reboot, with the max. time being 4 hours.

You also have to remember that the majority of computer users are retarded. There are those people who leave their computer on for a year straight. Then bitch about how their computer is getting slower and that it's microsoft's fault.

Call me crazy, but what's so difficult about rebooting after updates?

Nothing at all as long as you have control of when the reboot takes place.

Have you never compiled a large amount of code, rendered an entire scene in 3d just flat out had a lot of things open that you were working on?

Oh noes!!!! Your computer is doing what you've set it to do!!!!

Not sure how you can get pissed at Microsoft when you didn't RTFM.

That thing morphs into "rebooting in 5 minutes" if you don't watch it.

Yeah, gosh. How dare they put something in there to idiot proof Windows so they don't get blamed for making a "crappy" OS. That's just so over-stepping their "bounds".

It's utterly amazing how much people bitch. Vista is only "Crap" because people want to complain about something.

If you can do so much better, program our own OS and become a bagillionaire. That or go be an angsty nihilistic geek and run Linux, because it is so cool and different.

So that box that says these updates might require you to reboot is actually right? WOW :disgust:

....

He didn't set it to do that if it's the default setting. It should be the other way around.

An automatic reboot would be far more infuriating than the alternative.

Non-power users don't leave their computers on for a year.

Shoot...I remember the days when I had to reboot Windows a couple times a day because it kept crashing. I have Vista on my lappy and I think its made me reboot twice for updates.

OMG, just because you don't know how to select "Download updates but let me chose when to do that shit" option doesn't mean it's MS's faults. You can chose "Update when shutdown", you can chose "Update when I'm pooping"...

Fail IMO.

It seems to be 50/50 love/hate, but the install on my computer is a complete and utter pile of junk.

I can't even get a month of uptime out of this piece of shit OS. It reminds me of Windows 98.

On both my XP installs, I would reboot every 60-90 days, and my Windows 2000 machine would go 90+ days often.

How to fix this:

1. Start > Run > gpedit.msc
2. Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
3. Double click on "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations"
4. Select Enabled and then press OK
5. Profit

There are also some settings in there about how often it should check for updates, how often it should nag you to reboot, etc.

You simply need to edit your local group policy settings. It's as easy to manage this policy for an entire active directory domain as it is for a single computer. I would have thousands of people screaming at me if I had their computers rebooting (or even prompting for a reboot!) in the middle of the day. I have my policies set to automatically download the updates. However, the installation is scheduled for in the middle of the night. Hence, the reboot will also occur automatically in the middle of the night directly after the installation.

this must be what is rebooting my Vista machine once in a while overnight. I've never seen the message, personally.

Nice troll.

If troll == my opinion, then yes. You claim to not know that it would do this, but you sure went straight to the option to turn it off. Plus, if you don't save your work before you leave the computer for any length of time, then I don't know what to say to you to make it better.

lol that prompt always comes up on my professors laptop during her lectures. It's fun watching the countdown to see if she will notice it in time. She talks and talks and always seems to notice it during the last minute.

Lowest common denominator computing.

The same reason we have pictograph's so we can open a carton of milk, start our auto, relace our shoe laces...a world of people that only looks at the pictures.

While I understand it. Sometimes I really don't like it.
And wonder if there isn't going to be a price to pay for reinforcing total ignorance.
