This is something I don't see Google having anything anywhere close, and that is intriguing. Google, the people who make getting all the most awesome information on the web fairly easy, just got out googled.

If it wasn't for Microsoft making this in effing Siverlight, which ultimately is just a minor blemish, this is pretty damn awesome.

The TED Talk really sold this for me.

edit: link above. I see I forgot that.

insane resource requirements

but, this does look to be a valid use of resources
it'd be nice if it could be boiled down to a more simplistic web system.

It being it's own process and separate program, come to think of it, makes it even more awesome.
I'll just throw it on my awesome bar, er... Win7 taskbar.

Silverlight does have an offline option. I'm not sure if this app supports that but I think Silverlight is pretty good considering the alternative.

Silverlight is f'n amazing. My 6 year old T43 can run netflix on demand full screen without skipping a beat. Hulu on the other hand is choppy as shit.

the OP is easily entertained by shiny objects...humor him.

yes?

I think we can see the potential in that it is more or less a tech trial.
Hopefully they can expand upon this, and also bring it to web format.

The separate app concept is something I both like and dislike. Sometimes I enjoy the concept of web-apps being brought to desktop integration, scaling back from the "everything you do is in your browser" concept. I think that ran a little wild and we need to stop begging for it, imho.
But, this is also more or less like a search/database/trend engine, and in a simplified format would be humbled by a simple .com address.
What is Google Wave coded in? HTML5 with some fancy stuff added in? I could see this being brought to the web with that kind of architecture.

Something this resource intensive I'd despise being in the browser, so I do like that the glorified tech demo is indeed a separate app/process.

And for those looking for more info. Dammit go to the link and follow the rabbit hole for the TED Talk. I mentioned that in the OP, figured that would spark some intrigue.
A screenshot just wouldn't do this justice.

Silverlight IS better than Flash.
That isn't exactly saying much though.

Look at the resource recommendations for Pivot. That alone is like "woah. All that for a trend search engine?"

Not that that is bad though, because it's not a simple tool.

Oh, oops. Just saw I didn't actually put a link in the OP.
And now it's there.

Recommended System Configuration: Windows 7 with Aero enabled, 2-GHz 32-bit (x86) processor, 2 gigabytes of random access memory.
Supported System Configuration: Windows Vista with Aero enabled, 2-GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
Minimum Graphics Requirements: 256 megabytes of video memory. Pivot does not support most Intel integrated video chipsets.

It's not that bad. Yes, it won't work on most netbooks and entry-to-mainstream laptops (that typically feature Intel graphics chipsets) but not that bad really. It definitely looks impressive. Reminds me of the first time I checked out Photosynth - instant WOW-factor.

Is it just me or does Pivot just appear to be a fancy interface to existing OLAP cubes?

I can't tell what this is, even after viewing the video. Is this just for images, like google swirl, or does it relate to information collections as well? From the video it seems to be a collection of just thumbnails, which you can sort and zoom in on.

I take it you had the video on mute?

This looks like it could be alright... but I think people are so set in stone in terms of the ways in which they browse the internet that it might be difficult for something like this to catch on.

Not that I should be surprised but no Os x support even though silverlight does work on Os x.
