Does anyone know Microsoft's policy on making a back-up of your games? I read somewhere that some companies do not want you to back up your game and are supposedly willing to replace any non-working original copy.

My Age of Empires 2 got attacked by hungry relatives a week after I bought it. I figure Microsoft of all people can afford to give me a new working copy. But will they? (good luck finding anything on

Or should I just find a DAO burner?

?????

If the CD doesn't read anymore, then it's not going to burn. Most companies don't have any problem with you making a backup of YOUR game and holding on to both copies. What they don't like is when your friend makes a "backup" and then gives it to you. Every company I know of will replace a defective product, but I don't think they'll replace something that was damaged by your hungry relatives (?????).

By the way, what's a DAO burner?

I'll see if I can get a hold of MS Support (..like that's ever going to happen...)
Do you have any idea how one who is not a corporation goes about doing this?

RAW DAO is a "Disk At Once" mode that the better burners can handle. It successfully copies copy-protected disks.

Ok, I found the answer to my question, I thought others might be interrested...

Here's Microsoft's Policy

It states that you can make a backup of a CD for archival purposes only. If your original CD is damaged, you can request a replacement CD.

I just got off the phone with them (800) 360-7561. They are sending me a new AOE2 CD free of charge. (note: use this number, it will save you a few phone forwardings)

Wow, thats a great deal. I wish capcom was as cool with their DC games. I scratched my Resident Evil:CV disk being an oaf, and they want $20 + my old disk (which is understandable) before they mail it out.

No matter what the company's policy is, you're allowed to make one back up copy of any program that you buy.
