Microsoft snub PC Gaming

Let's face it we should all be used to this by now, Microsoft have once again ignored PC gaming during their hugely significant keynote at CES. During a two hour presentation plagued by technical difficulties, there was barely any attention paid to the world's most widely used platform.

How about 3D gaming? Well they did show off Dirt 2 in Direct X11 enhanced 3D and a selection of gaming laptops with impressive amounts of power. However again this was nothing we hadn't seem demoed before in much greater detail.

Microsoft were more than happy to trot out gaming's best when it came to the 360, but for the PC they only payed lip service with a few mediocre announcements. This CES has seen new information about Halo Reach, Fable 3, Alan Wake, Project Natal and Xbox Live. So what do we get? Another way to watch TV on our PC...

If the big M really are serious about empowering PC development they must be willing to evangelise the platform at every opportunity, and frankly yesterday's showing at CES was nowhere near good enough.

Wow, people will bitch about anything. I don't find this significant, and I'm sick of the "sky is falling" attitude people have toward PC gaming lately. Get over it - PC gaming is in great shape. I don't need a MS executive to comfort me on that front.

So you're not the least bit concerned that the company who makes the platform you use to play games doesn't really care about PC gaming? I don't think the sky is falling either but i'm also not going to just stick my head in the sand.

I expect to see you on the national news standing outside Microsoft's Seattle location with a picket sign then?

Ha. No, i'm not "that" concerned about it. I just saw that article and thought it was interesting and figured people might want to read it.

Are we really surprised that Microsoft isn't pumping up a product that is a direct competitor to its Xbox? I doubt microsoft is anti-PC gaming, but they sure aren't stupid for ignoring it as much as possible in favor of touting their Xbox lineup.

Makes more sense for Microsoft to pump time and energy in getting developers to develop for the XBox rather than get Games for Windows Live all figured out.

This coming from somebody who only games on PC and has no console. Microsoft isn't out there to appease the PC gaming community, they are out their to appease the shareholders and make them rich. Pretty simple.

There's worse things then Microsoft ignoring and snubbing PC Gaming. They could actually have actually given a shit! If they actually tried competing they might have been successful and then we'd really be screwed.

I wonder why the shareholders never encouraged them to exit the console business and cut their losses. The Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 have cost Microsoft billions.

Microsoft should have spun off their hardware division (or never entered it in the first place) and focused on games for all platforms. Hell, with the billions they lost on the Xbox franchise, they could have purchased countless start-up companies and sold $60 games on all platforms or even took over a sizable publishers / developer or two.

Haven't licensing fees helped make a profit?

How is MS actually getting money if what you're saying is true (unless you're just counting the production/distribution/sales costs of solely the Xbox)?

Watching encrypted subscription TV on your computer with a cablecard is a pretty big deal to the HTPC crowd. Myself included.

I looked up some of their financial releases. For a few quarters it did generate a small profit (by Microsoft standards), but it will take a long time (if profitable quarters of that size return) to make up for the losses from Xbox 1 and the many bad quarters of the 360. Currently, afaik, they are still losing money on it.

They generate revenue via xbox live, Halo, Halo, fees from other publishers, accessories and Halo.

The result of the Xbox 1 over 4 years:
http://www.joystiq.com/2005/09/26/forbes-xbox-lost-microsoft-4-billion-and-counting/
The Xbox division in particular has lost Microsoft $4 billion in four years according to Forbes.

It was bad for the xbox division still in 2007:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161479
$1.9 billion loss attributed to poor software sales, new warranty.

An article from mid 2009
http://boycottnovell.com/2009/05/03/microsoft-xbox-failure-departure/
A LOT of people are being misled by Microsoft’s PR, which makes it seem like XBox 360 is actually succeeding. In reality — truth be told — several years after the launch Microsoft is still losing money

A year or so ago, Information Week revealed that Microsoft had lost about $7 billion in its XBox business alone. It seems to be one of the best-guarded secrets of Microsoft.

(latest xbox specific article that I can find) Fourth quarter 2009 (bad quarter for everyone):
http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=4487
posted a $130 million loss

WHOOOO CARRRRES

The entire keynote was a waste for console and PC gamers alike. A little bit more about Natal, bullshit about a new xbox live avatar arcade that nobody cared about, and a trailer of Halo Reach that was blocked from web viewing.

I don't know if it's always been this way and I never noticed, but this generation of PC gamers are a bunch of whiny bitches... crying about something different every week it seems.

Yeah pc gaming sucks today, got myself a 5850 and im using it to play 2007 games... theres nothing new + good on the pc that isnt a port, i.e. better on the console. Lucky im not pc game exclusive

Looking forward to SCII and supcom 2 though, should give this 5850 somthing more recent to chew on.

With Steam offering massive reductions in their prices on many games from the first decade of 2000 and many members of Anandtech snapping up a lot of games, I cannot really see this mythical decline in good games.

New games on the horizon look a little bit slim in the pickings but when you are expecting Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, there is a bit of hype and hope. Dawn of War 2 are about to release their new expansion pack, Chaos Rising. Crysis has been given a new lease of life by a group of fans producing Mechwarrior: Living Legends as our stopgap before Mechwarrior 5.

PC Gamers are their own worst enemies. Those who profess that PC gaming is in decline because Microsoft do not give them much attention must forget that Microsoft has never really given PC gamers much attention since the XBox was released in 2001/2002ish. Has that stopped us from having some of the best PC games ever created?

I think not.

There is no reason to assume that because Microsoft does not put on some special graphics show with many ooohhh pretty colours games for the PC that the nature of the PC gaming industry is going to turn out for the worse in the coming years.

I don't understand this type of pessimism. I have more games than I can play at the moment, and almost all of them are excellent, including many games that were released in the last 12 months. I think you're just looking for things to bitch about, which is typical of PC gamers lately.

Good point. For what they've lost on the Xbox, they could have owned the entire software gaming industry. And software is something they've generally been successful with, where as thier hardware ventures have usually been failures.

I found out with DIRT 2, that Microsoft's "Games for Windows LIVE" is not online friendly. If you live in one the 166 unsupported countries around the world, you can not race DIRT 2 online.

But if you know the trick you can lie and say you live in one the only 26 LIVE supported countries. But if you do not know this trick and unknowing set up new LIVE ID that is tie to an unsupported country, your CD-key is forever tie to this LIVE ID that will not let you race online. You just wasted $40-$70 on a game you can not race online!

I wonder if the 26 supported countries are the only countries that sell the xbox?

GFWL stole my game

Does GFWL help prevent piracy or help create piracy?

Steam vs GFWL ( Games for Windows LIVE ) and unsupported countries.
