Come on down to the NAIAS and check out the Sync display...while you're at it, you can say hi to me up on the Flex stage.

*note, my working for Ford does not represent any affinity or allegiance for/to the brand.

anyone else remember a couple years back we used to have a poster here with the name ajayjuneja or something. And his group at CMU (i think) was developing something similar. He had a display car - a G35, displaying the voice activation software. He mentioned a couple times that he's under talk with some major car companies. Wonder if MS bought out his product and is now marketing it as this SYNC...

I have a 2008 Ford Fusion SEL that I waited to get so that it had the Sync system on it. I would say 90% of the time it works as well as advertised. There are some times that it doesn't understand what you are saying although I attribute that mostly to road noise/heater blasting. There is no training whatsoever except for initially installing your phone in the system which takes about a minute. It is completely hands free and all you have to do is push a button on the wheel and say a command. There are some features it wont let you do while the car is in drive I believe so you cannot really lose focus.

The MP3 player portion can use an Ipod or even better it can just link to a USB flash drive. Just plug it in and push the button and say what artist/song/album/genre you want and it will go right to it. It really is impressive.

I use the phone aspects more than anything as it links up via bluetooth and indexes your phonebook automatically. If you are talking on the phone and get in the car it takes about 10 seconds for it to transfer over to the car system, same when getting out of the car. I'm glad I waited for it because it's definitely worth whatever price they charge for it.

The first real post of the thread. Thanks for all the info. How much did you end up paying for it, or are you leasing your Fusion?

Neg. This is Microsoft, not Ford.

I bought the Fusion, the Sync upgrade is standard on the SEL models for the Fusion. I ended up paying invoice on the fusion then less 1500 in rebates, cant remember exactly what that was at this point.

According to CarsDirect.com, it's a $344 option.

The biggest problem Ford has is the legacy of poor quality and lackluster products they have, as is shown in this thread. What's amusing is that the same people would likely praise Mercedes for the quality of their vehicles even though their repair histories are horrible lately since shifting production out of Germany. In ATOT terms: Ignorance FTW!

You want boring? Let's talk about Honda. *snore*

The American manufacturers are doing a lot of interesting stuff lately. I'm not in the market for a new vehicle right now, though we're likely to buy a minivan in the next few years. We'll be looking at Chrysler/Dodge then, not Honda or Nissan.

Got to finally try a vehicle with SYNC, Wow is all I have to say, it's damn near amazing. I could play anything I wanted from my iPod Touch. I also paired a bluetooth iPhone and was able to call people, but for some reason it would not download the contact list.

All in all it's very very cool.

I don't know if it helps any, but I did an internet quote for a current Fusion a while back, and SYNC was listed as about $1700 on the quote.

Edit: Unless that included an upgraded audio system too

Ford has more than just legacy to contend with. They offer nothing in the way of features, other than Sync (which is a recent addition). They have a leg up on Chrysler in that there is quality involved, but they are lacking when compared to GM. Seriously, the Mercury Milan I test drove reminded me of my old POS 2 Door Explorer.

I still can't believe they haven't brought over the European Ford Focus. I've heard it's actually a very nice car and it shares the same frame as the Mazda3 and a Volvo model.

Honda is basically the only car company where you can make a blanket statement. For every other car company, you have to research that model to determine it's reliability. Ford does make some nice cars now, but they still have quite a few that practically fall apart.

I was wondering about this thing so hyped. The only thing that sounds different from my idrive (vastly improved recently) is the ability to go right to a song that you name... otherwise it also has voice command, blue tooth pairing, contact list indexing, etc. I suppose Sync is faster, but of course it was made by an actual software company.

My granny has it on her Ford Fuckus. I doubt she even knows it's there or what it does.

MotiveMag had a pretty good write up about it vs. the Audi MMI system. They liked the Sync a lot and were very impressed with how well it performed. It seemed their only dislike was that it wasn't available on cars other than Fords. They did notice that the system did seem to slow down a little when Navigation was included...but still had a lot of praise for it.
