Some of the phone calls lately are ridiculous, I went along with it for about 2 minutes.

I let him go along for a few minutes, then he realized I was playing with him and heard "Fuck you asshole" from his end.

I loled a lot

I wasn't in the mood to go for epic ownage.

The scam is, they tell you your system has errors, and they're calling to help.

They have an instruction for you to look at a file showing a lot of error messages.

Then, to start helping, it involves installing a program...

Ya, it's a phishing scam.

Either string them along to waste their time or hang up. I once spent an hour explaining how ashamed the person's mother would be of their becoming a thief if she knew.

I strung one of those poor guys along for over an hour once. I had him login to a ridiculously slow VM. It was filled with spyware and I trottled my internet down to dialup speed to make his remote experience a night mare. He eventually gave up and hung up. lol.

I need to setup a VM like that again. I want to make it look like it's a military computer or something. Most of the time when they call I don't really have the time to waste though so I tend to make it quit. I tell them I don't have a computer or something.

Anytime I get a customer's computer who has one of those full-screen fake FBI deals with a "support" phone numbger to call, I use that website about 15 times while I'm fixing the computer. It records by default & it's hilarious to hear people's reactions. The other day, I used the Marines one & got to level 3 of fake tech support from India before someone figured it out & cursed out the recording before hanging up

They actually call you asking to loan you money?

Nah they want to loan me money. It's one of the more popular ways to drag the ill informed into their high interest rate business model. I've complained using the donotcall.gov complaint form but each time they get a new number and recall. I'm glad that the state of FL has a do not call list separate from the fed and they are prosecuting violators. My number won't be active on the list until the next quarter and then I'll be submitting a complaint with each unsolicited call.

I been gettin a bunch of calls from the "IRS" , not sure what the scam is but I am not going to hang on the line to find out.

My mother-in-law has been lately, since she moved down here.

My wife was on the phone last night for awhile semi-bitching her out and telling her not to talk to them.

The saddest thing? All the callers have had Indian accents and that wasn't suspicious because that's "standard" now.

What's funny is that they were still saying IRS. They finally learned to say CRA now. I find I can often tell if a phone call is a scam fairly quickly though, like there is a version of the indian accent that just sounds more "scammy". Like, it gives me a vibe that "oh yes, this has to be a scam" the second they start talking.

I get ADT calls sometimes (do have an alarm system through Protectron which got bought by them) and I can never tell if it's a scam or not, they have "that" voice. I'll ask if they can transfer me to someone in Canada or someone who speaks French next time just to see what happens. By law they have to, if it's a real company.
