32 billion will be dumped directly to investors now, and the regular yearly dividends will double, totaling 75 billion in cash paid out to investors over the next 4 years.

Microsoft's two biggest share holders, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, will get 3.3B and 1.2B respectively. Gates yearly income will increase by 180 Million, most of his money now goes to his charity foundation.

This is a good sign for Microsoft haters.

It means that the company doesn't think that that money can be used more effectively to increase the growth of the company.

Microsoft has Jumped the Shark.

Oh and thanks to Bush, instead of paying 38% on those dividend income, Bill Gate will be paying 15%. (If Bush had his way, Bill would have paid 0% on that 180 mil) Yeap, he really needed the extra cash.

should have read the articles;
DiDio pointed out that, based on company profits, Microsoft can easily recover the dividends and other payouts. "If they are taking out only 25 percent of the coffers in any given year, they can make that back in a year and not adversely impact the bottom line," she said.
...
Microsoft, which generates about $1 billion in cash per month, said that despite the payout, it would still have enough funds for research and acquisitions.

If you want to get in on this, the stockholders of record on November 7, 2004 will be in on the payout. The bad news is that it will be around 3 dollars a share.

Its Bill Gates' money.. not the governments. If Gates loses 3 billion dollars, does the government reimbuse him 15%?

Well, kinda... If you have a 3 billion dollar loss on a stock sale, you get to write that off on your taxes.

Actually, I'm not sure how much you are allowed to write off on your taxes, there may be an upper limit.

Exactly. For person stock losses, you get to write off max. of 3000/per year on your capital gain in the future. For company losses, you have to read a book to know all the different ways a company can write those losses off and avoid paying taxes in the future.

I means that they are smart enough to avoid becoming a conglomerate.

Gates has already stated all proceeds from the dividends will being going into his nonprofit. That means that charity organization will be getting more money.

Umm a $3 a share dividend will = a $3 a share drop in the stock price(roughly). Unless for some wacky reason people think that MS giving all that money to shareholders will increase the value of the company somehow.

Stock buyback = higher earnings per share = higher share price
Dividend = loss in value of company = loss in value of stock price

Oh yeah, I am sure Bush had that idea in mind when he decided to hand the ultra rich some tax free dividend money......they will all give those to charity......
