SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. will combat piracy of its flagship operating system by requiring Windows users to verify that their copy of the software is genuine in order to receive timely updates and security fixes, the world's largest software maker said Wednesday.

Under a new verification program, users will have to prove their copy was obtained legitimately to receive "greater reliability, faster access to updates, and richer user experiences" from Windows XP, the latest version of the operating system running on over 90 percent of the world's personal computers.

Users of pirated copies of Windows will still be able get some updates, such as security patches, but will not be able to get other add-ons for Windows, the Redmond, Wash.-based company said in a statement.

The new initiative, called Windows Genuine Advantage, will start in mid-2005.

Microsoft (Research) said it will expand in February a trial authentication program it began last fall for English-language users to include 20 more languages. In order to attract more users to the trial, Microsoft is also offering downloads of add-on software and discounts on games and online services.

Authentication will become mandatory in mid-2005 for all users seeking to access software updates, downloads and security fixes for Windows, Microsoft said.

Microsoft is also targeting software piracy in China, Norway and the Czech Republic, where the use of pirated software is more widespread, by offering discounts to users of pirated copies of Windows.

"These customers will be offered a genuine version of Windows at a reduced price," Microsoft said.

Microsoft said it was trying to boost the value of Windows, which still fuels a large part of the software giant's revenue. Microsoft said software piracy has cost the company billions of dollars in lost income.

Didn't they already start doing this with SP1 and blocking a ton of commonly pirated keys from downloading it?

At which point the pirates found a way around it, just like they will probably do this time.

"These customers will be offered a genuine version of Windows at a reduced price," Microsoft said.

"Hey Bob, let's reward pirates by making them pay less than honest people!"

"Say, Stan, I like the way you think!!!"

Yep, all it means is that instead of using my regular BS windows key, I actually have to walk over to the computer center and get the university site key, to which I am legally entitled anyway.

I say within a week or two they will find a way to get around this.

What other add-ons? Do they mean bloat?

thats what i was thinking. if they are going to do this, at least give the legit users a better incentive. 'ms movie maker deluxe!!!~!!~!~!!~!!~!' (yes, the new version will have the tilde's and exclamation points)

Amazing... I suspect that this will backfire on them as it did for TurboTax last year. They're just going to alienate more of their legitimate users & there will be a 'pirated' way around whatever they come up with pretty quickly...

They are always one step behind the curve.

MS offers reduced prices on XP, does anyone know how reduced?

I commend them for still letting pirates have the security updates...

The problem has to be taken care of, and any open system out there is a threat to every other one. Good job Microsoft!

What about the corporations. could you imagine having to authenticate every machine at your company??

I would hope corporate users are not effected by this.

On a more serious note...I dont understand why users of pirated copies should get a discount when I went out and paid full price....where do I sign up to get my money back?...cuz since I went out and bought a legit copy in the first place I think they should give me a bigger discount.
