I know that microsoft has been discontinuing their wireless products by the recent clearence at various stores.

I was at costco yesterday in modesto, california and they had the USB 2.0 wireless G adapters for $18.99 each. If these are known to be good quality, then I'd suppose its a hot deal for those of you who have usb 2.0. I'm not sure if this is at all costcos, or its just some. Officemax has these for $29.99 if you can still find them there or in stock online.

usb 2.0 is backward compatable with 1.1, and 1.0
I'm not sure if you are asking a question or not..but a USB 2.0 peripheral is not backward compatible with USB 1.1 or 1.0
If you had a 1.1 or 1.0 peripheral it would be backward compatible with USB 2.0

I hope that made sense...in other words you can plug an USB 1.1 or 1.0 item into a USB 2.0 input on your computer but you cannot plug a USB 2.0 item into a USB 1.1 or 1.0 input.

this device is backwards compatible (you can plug it into a usb 1.0 or 1.1) according to the microsoft website, but to have full speed, its better to have an availible usb 2.0 port.

yes you can. it just won't transfer at USB 2.0 speeds, but it will definately work.

You are incorrect.
If you plug a Wireless G USB 2.0 adapter into a USB 1.0 or 1.1 connection,
it will work. It will NOT operate at G speeds, but WILL operate at B speeds.

This is from the manual for the Microsoft Wireless G USB 2.0 adaptor:
"The USB adaptor will provide the fastest speeds if it is connected to a USB 2.0 port.
Most newer computers have USB 2.0 ports built in. If you have an older computer, it
probably has a built-in USB 1.0 or 1.1 port that supports speeds up to 12 Mbps.

If Universal Host Controller, Open Host Controller or USB Root Hub device is listed in Device Manager, your computer has a USB 1.0 or 1.1 port. To get the fastest speeds from your wireless USB 2.0 adapter, you must purchase and install a USB 2.0 add-in card.

To use the USB 2.0 Adapter (MN-710), you need:
PC with available USB 1.0 or higher, complient high-powered port and running Microsoft Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home or Professional operating system.
For maximum performance, use a USB 2.0 port"

No, what you want is an ethernet bridge.

Keep an eye out though, I've seen the MS branded Xbox bridge (and other brands) on here for ~$50 pretty regularly and I would expect the MS one should pop up on clearance.

Too bad the costco near my house don't have any MS wireless product anymore. I pick up the USB G adapter a few months ago for $30 no rebate.

That's just not true. They're both fully compatible both ways -- you just need 2.0 on both ends to get the speed.

It would be an odd choice to take a 54mbps G antenna and plug it into an 11mbps USB 1.1 hub, but hey, you could if you wanted.

edit: oh yeah, the MS Wireless equipment is actually really good. This is a hot deal.

Nice adaptor at a great price!

I picked up one of these a few months ago, for use on my niece's computer. Using the supplied cd, it installed easily and flawlessly in a matter of minutes, with great speed transfer from a non-MS wireless G router my sister had purchased.

I'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone.

Yes, and that is becasue they are horrible at it.

I don't know if you've actually used the stuff, but after working with other manfacturer's stuff (Granted the older .11B), their stuff is by far the best I've used. They make installation incredibly easy and I get great signal with this adapter, which I picked up a month ago at officemax on clearance to go with my MS 11G router I've had for almost a year. I haven't ever seen any complaints about their G Line of products, I'm assuming that Microsoft's standards for profit margin probably are too high for an industry where you can get top of the line components for under $50. Anyway, I'd recommend this stuff at full price, so at $18.99 it's a scalding hot deal.

Cheers

This is a good deal. I got the adapter a while back when my D-Link DWL-122 was giving me problems. It was around $40 I think.

this is a great deal, and 2.0 is backward compatable with 1.0, 1.1. And the adapter will connect to your router @ G speeds, but from the adapter to your PC it will transfer at usb 1.1-1.0 speeds which will in fact be faster than if you had a B adapter hooked up to a USB 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0 adapter. This is a good deal for anyone who has a G network reguardles of you USB version.

I should of mentioned this earlier; thanks for the post headed there this weekend, and I'll have to pick a few of these up.
