Hot for those using the already free old version of Virtual PC, so this is more of a heads up to everyone since the previous one was free as well, especially now that people running x64 systems can use it now.

Still does not support 64-bit guest OS...I can't believe this. How do they expect to beat the other offerings when they don't offer this important feature. I'd use this at work except I NEED 64-bit guest support, so VMWare for me.

By the way, this was not intended as a crap, just to point out to anyone who was hoping that you could now run 64-bit guests that you still can't. It does allow you to run Vista as a guest now, so that's a good thing.

i have XP x64 installed just this past weekend so I can utilize all 4GB of RAM (only get 3.2 on 32-bit). I never realized there are so many things I need to redownload. Minor things like Powertoys, TweakUI, uxtheme.dll patch that worked fine in win32 all need to be patched or a x64 version for 64-bit...

and can 32-bit hosts support x64 guests in vmware? I never really tried this in win xp 32bit

any of the distro's with a graphical interface seem to crap out. i tried ubuntu when the beta came out, and all i get is graphical corruption. tried a few more including linspire, and they do the same thing

As long as you have 64-bit hardware, yes, you could in theory have a 64-bit guest on a 32-bit host...at least, I'm pretty sure you can.

YES, 32-bit hosts can support 64-bit guests in VMWare. I have two Windows Server 2003 x64 VM's running on top of my 32-bit Vista Ultimate install so I can test out Exchange 2007. I am not sure if there is any kind of performance penalty vs. running the guests on a 64-bit host though. Can anyone confirm on that?

The previous versions did not support USB.

Let's say you have a USB scanner that is not supported under Vista. If this supported USB, you could use it to install XP under Vista and use your scanner that way without having to dual boot.

Does this latest version support USB?

This link might help:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToConfigureUbuntuForMicrosoftVirtualPC2004"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToConfigureUbuntuForMicrosoftVirtualPC2004">https://help.ubuntu.com/community.........buntuForMicrosoftVirtualPC2004</a></a>

I was using those instructions actually, finally got it to work by mounting the ISO via Alcohol 52% rather than just Virtual PC.

Anyone know if you can import a VMware image to Virtual PC? or of any free tools to do so?

Currently VMware doesn't have support for Vista as a Host OS.

Nope. Still lacks USB device support (not including keyboard and mouse) AFAIK. This was why I used VMWare Server on Vista; however I later found a weird bug that when I remote desktoped into my machine with VMWare Server installed the remote machine (Vista) would respond as if I was holding down the Windows key. So if I were to type the letter "F" it would would immediately behave as if I hit WindowKey+F which brings up the find files dialog. Extremely annoying and as soon as I uninstalled VMWare Server the problem went away. Now I'm using Virtual PC 2007 but I don't need USB.

nice find.. but with no 64bit guest OS support, and no USB support, it's virtually useless for me... DOH!

Does anyone know if it will run UNofficially on XP Home? The older version (2003?) of VirtualPC did--it just popped up a warning that it wasn't officially supported. Would be nice to know before spending the time to download it. Thanks!

I recall that previous versions had to be started in safe graphics mode--Virtual PC didn't support 24 bit color, or somesuch, and would only support 16-bit color. Would you mind checking to see if that's still true with Ubuntu?

Thanks!

So this is mainly for running software and not hardware. I would really like an XP virtual machine, but one of the primary reasons would be to use my USB Scanner, which Vista doesn't support. So it looks like this scenario won't work.

Does all the hardware have to be working in Vista for the Virtual PC to be able to access the same hardware?

Virtual machines use a generic SVGA driver. Virtual machines also do not support any type of 3d acceleration.

Yeh, it is the 24-bit color that is causing all the problems, you have to go into the command prompt and tell it to use 16-bit color, shame they have not added 24-bit color support.

I am working on getting Mepis working... it seems to be installing fine, so far.

I started with the Live CD version, and on the desktop there is an icon that runs the install for you.
