Anyone know the limitations of the OEM license? Is it somehow "married" once to a hardware configuration?

Nope, same as XP. If you do significant upgrade, it will prompt you to call in just like before.

Shipping is a bit pricy. You will save if you qualify for google check out but without it, it is $113 + $9 = $122 for me.

Doesn't OEM microsoft software tie you to the motherboard?

Yes, the new EULA for the OEM versions states that it is tied to the system itself (i.e. mainboard). If your mianboard dies though, call MS and you can state your reasons and you should be fine.

"should" being the operative word. If you want to take a chance and save a few bucks going OEM, this does seem like a good price. IMHO, however, saving a few bucks isn't always worth it.

If you call, they'll make anything work.....almost.

It's like "hey, my re-install won't work"

MS Guy "type in this big, crazy, long number"

Me "cool, it's working. Bye."

$100 for OEM vs. $200+ for Retail is a few bucks?

Well, if you don't qualify for the google checkout, it's over $120. And the upgrade version isn't all that much more. So yeah. Plus, you don't even get the 64-bit version with the OEM.

Like I said, IMHO

If you want to take a chance and get stuck not getting activated because you change out your motherboard. I'm sure VIsta will be around for quite a while. It's just not worth it to me for something that I'm going to use for the next 4-5 years or whatever.

It's your cash. Do with it what you please

Actually , the license has not changed on OEM. It is the same as the XP license. All you need to do is call and explain your upgrade. They will activate it. There is a Google Checkout button when you checkout on the site. I don't see anywhere where it says you have to be a new Google Checkout member. It looks more like a promotion to get you to use Google but I may be wrong. The upgrade version burns your XP key so you can't use it on another machine. I have not seen a single version that includes both a 32 and 64 bit OS. I hear the Ultimate does but that is way too pricey for me If you own a legit copy of Vista you can request a 64 bit or 32 bit cd and even on regular CD if you don;t have DVD. It is free with a nominal shipping charge.

You pay $14 more for being a 64bit 'tester'?
Other than that, dunno why they would charge more.

I though there was a link/article somewhere on AT that showed how an upgrade disc can be used to do a clean install without a prior OS loaded.

edit: here ya go

Sure - but even the article you linked to said it breaks the trems of the license. I agree it seems unfair to not be able to validate an install by showing a valid CD is cumbersome - but obviously Microsoft changed the way they want to handle it for their own reasons.

As I understand the difference between oem vs retail is oem has no support and retail has software support.
