Same thing to say as everyone else. I ma not much of a programmer yet, but I was impressed with the capabilities this .NET platform seems to have. On a side note at the end of our seminar they did not remove the extra bags by the entrance. Man I thought pirhanas were fast eaters you should have seen these people tear into the boxes. The guy hosting our seminar stated that the software should retail for like $1099

I too just got back from UCLA and let me tell you guys, MICROSOFT knows how to throw a PARTY!

I got there about 5:30 (one hour before it was supposed to start) and a line had already started to form. I patiently waited as the line grew longer...MUCH longer, so for all you folks whose events are tomorrow, GET THERE IN ADVANCE!

Anyway, so I walk into the Ackerman Ballroom and the lights were dimmed, and there was some rock music playing in the background, but what astounded me was all the GOOD food they had set up. Oh yeah, you get the grab bag as you walk in, so you can just walk out if you wish. Really nice sandwiches, veggies, chips, dips, jalepeno poppers, cheese sticks, taquitos, eggrolls, all sorts of desserts from brownies to cookies, lemonade and punch. It was a feast...especially considering we paid absolutely nothing for it all.

I ran into a fellow anandtecher, but the place was PACKED...and everyone basically had to sit on the floor...only a few chairs on the sides of the room. The lecturer was fairly boring and the programmer was a little more entertaining, but all in all, I'd say it was well worth anyone's time.

Oh yeah, the band was a huge surprise, and it wasn't as bad as the other guy was saying (although Lady Marmalade is sung by 3 women and this band sung it with 1 lady and 2 dudes).

They gave away 2 xboxes too, so that was pretty cool of em.

I'm going to install xp tonight so I will catch you guys later...thank you Microsoft and ANANDTECH!

hmm...I might get flamed for this, but here goes:

did they actually scan your ID's? (those that have the capability of having it scanned ) or did they just look to see if it was you?

Reason I'm asking is I'm not actually taking classes this semester, so if they scan my ID, it will show that I'm not a student

I just got back from Tucson event.

It was pretty entertaining, especially when the guy who was presenting the Visual Studio.NET and its abilities couldn't get the code to work on the cell phone emulator. That gave him a good opportunity to show us how easy debugging is, but unfortunately the code still didn't work. Oh well, we just moved on to the music part. Unfortunately I couldn't wait until they'll give away XBox and other goodies, since I have so many assignments before my midterms, its not even funny.

Overall, I think the entire event was very worth the time and now I'm a happy owner of Visual Studio.NET (7 CDs, Academic version), Windows XP Professional and other .NET goodies. Good luck to everyone who is still going to attend the presentation at their local school!

1. Free dinner
2. the presenter will bring 2 copies of .net, 1 copy of C# and several other C#/.net reference book
3. You gotta ask good questions to get those hotties

chances of getting .net 20%
chance of Free Dinner 100%

Enjoy!

Hey I just got back from the UCLA event and my bag didn't have no t-shirt . lol. I wondered why other peoples bags were bigger than mine. Well I got there right at 6:30 and the line was crazy, but they waited till 7:15 so everyone could get in. Parking was $6.00, but I figure I ate that much in food. The event was a lot more casual than I thought it would it be. They had students running things and they weren't that strict. My student ID doesn't have an updated expiration sticker on it, but they didn't look that close. They just glanced and then made sure your name was on the list. The presentation was only an hour long and then they gave stuff away. The band at the end had no chance. All those geeky students bailed after the Xbox's were gone. I guess they were anxious to load their new software. This event was totally worth it and I'm actually glad I didn't get there early. They waited for everyone and I still got all the goodies (except my t-shirt, I needed that for oil changes, etc. ).

Edit: The UCLA event had all the goodies as others have also posted, but it sounds like some of the other events weren't as good? Heck the UCLA event was worth it just for all the beautiful geeky asian girls.

Edit: I did get the t-shirt. It was shrink-wrapped into a little cube and it looked like a thick package of post-it notes. How funny!

You do.. You get VS .net Academic (don't know wut the difference is but I'm sure there're differences) & Win. XP Pro..

I just came back from UCLA too.. Everything was cool except for the line I think.. It wasn't too organized.. I guess there're just too many ppl.. The food they provided was crazy though.. I was impressed. Too bad I ate rite before I went there so I didn't eat anything.. Another cool thing is that it ended early... around 8:15 i think. Yay I got my XP!!

The UCLA one was a joke. There were a ton of people and 2 rent a cops running the lines. Everyone was waiting in a registered line or waiting line. I didn't have a school ID and noticed the big signs stating "must have a valid school ID for admission". I decided to find out right away if I could get the free swag or not. When Security guard #1 came outside to check on the line, I walked in and got stopped by security guard#2. I told him I had to ask the lady at the registration table a question. I walked up to her and said, "I'm from another school and signed up there." She asked what my name was and gave me my raffle ticket & name tag. NO ID needed!! Got the goods by 6:45, went home because there were way too many people to only raffle 10 items. (Only 2 xbox's!) I did try the punch and abrubtly threw it away. It tasted like dirty sewer water!! FREE XP Professional rules!!

<< Hey did they come in a retail box or just a cd envelope?

Antz
>>

Windows XP Pro comes in the plastic envelope. CD clearly says "Not For Resale or OEM Distribution"
Visual Studio.NET comes in shrinkwrapped package. Each CD says "Visual Stuido.NET Academic", and as we all know, academic versions are not for resale either.

The Windows XP Professional sleeve also comes with this tag : Unlicensed Software - Illegal without seperate license from Microsoft

The weird thing is, I couldn't find a license anywhere in the bag. Does that mean the software is illegal?

just got back from ucla, exhausted, it was a 2 hour drive each way. All worth it though. Microsoft knows how to throw a party. Good food, and the demo was impressive. Free software rules!

I heard ALL the waiting list people got in at UCLA. I still saw bags of the software on the tables even after everybody was in. Stick it out if you go to one of these things, you never know.

i went to the ucla one. i was gonna leave after i got the xp pro, but the presentation was actually really good and VS.NET seemed like a really good software suite. then again i'm a compsci major and i may have to use that someday. i probably am not gonna use the one i got today, i have other software i need to learn as of now.

Anyways , it was so much more relaxed than i thought. plus some peopple iknew at the end . got like more than 1 bag of software. A friend of mine from UCI he wen,t and went to the bathroom. when he walked back in they gave him another back, and on the way out they gave him another one so he got 3, and is giving them to his roomate and a friend of ours that couldnt go.

overall i love microsoft. THE cd sleeve has the license onthe back of it btw , obviously the CD alone isnt a valid install, but with the sleeve it is . I dunno if the wait list got in. A couple of my friends were in the line, and i heard the UCLA woman running it say that ackerman was in violation of firecodes already so they couldnt let more people in but who knows.

Just got back from the UCLA and I thought it was worth the 2 hour drive from San Diego to check it out. The first talker had a problem with his mic + stuttering, but the second guy was cool. Food was a nice surprise, and having everyone boo the winners of the X-box was entertaining All in all, it was a good event.

<< The Academic version of VB6 would allow you to create and run full programs, you just could not compile them into stand alone applications (.exe's). You were required to run them from within Visual Basic. >>

I just tried it right now... the exe's can be run as stand alone programs. yay!

I just got back from the ucla one... yummy food... free stuff... too bad most of the good prizes went to non-ucla students... you'alls stole our stuff! j/k I managed to snag one of the $100 gift checks... w00t! The Xboxes they gave away were in beat up boxes-- uhhh.. methinks they played with them at the microsoft office and decided to give them away when they were done? I was talking to the rest of the guys that got the big prizes... I was the lone ucla student among them... people from usc (hiss... boo!)san diego... san francisco... craziness... what lengths we will go to to get free stuff!
